      Good hours, terrible management

      Pros

As is to be expected working in the civil service, the hours are good. Most of the lawyers/solicitors are really friendly and helpful. In that sense, it's a lovely atmosphere and very social. I worked in the litigation team and some of the matters I worked on were extraordinarily high profile and interesting.

      Cons

Though the cases I worked on were interesting, the actual work I did on them was mind numbing. With the split in the profession counsel had all of the interesting legal work, and the advisory lawyers had the client liaison. Much of the work i did was forwarding emails between the two and formatting court docs. The upper management were excruciatingly bad - they never listened, no communication, no management skills. Bullying by managers was ignored by team leaders, even after numerous complaints by various people. My team's results from the yearly review of morale/management/work (which were done by every team) were withheld from us, presumably because they were so bad. Employees who wanted support from their managers to move into other opportunities within the Government Legal Department were repeatedly blocked, leading to many good lawyers quitting.
