    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Grant Thornton UK LLP full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Agile working, supportive staff and managers, chance to work alongside some fast growing and interesting clients, strong collective atmosphere amongst associates and executives across the department.

    Cons

High levels of delegation at the executive level means extra hours often required in busy season. Promotion post-qualification is slow in contrast to the Big 4.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the levels of staff through the executive level. Currently the A3, E1, E2 and AM positions all entail very similar roles and responsibility, however it takes an average of 4 years to progress from A3 through to AM. This should be addressed.

I have been working at Grant Thornton UK LLP as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great people, culture and lots of support available. Early responsibility with plenty opportunities for training and career progression.

    Cons

As with most financial professional services firms the biggest downside is the hours. However, there is a policy (TOIL) for anyone below management level to reclaim additional hours spent outside of the working week.

    Advice to Management

Continue with the existing values and culture.

I have been working at Grant Thornton UK LLP full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Ability to move around the firm, geographically and department.
    - Focus and awareness of the firm's overall strategic direction.
    - Access to wide-ranging client sectors and sizes. From public benefit charities to breweries. Can have a sector specialism to focus on but not restricted to.
    - Paid overtime or TOIL (pre-approved, but not difficult to get).
    - Strong leadership team.

    Cons

    - Length of time taken to arrange internal moves/secondments (although current being worked on)
    - Difficulty getting holidays at any time of year, in particular '5 day rule' on busy season (January - June)
    - Due to the size of the departments, quiet people will often be 'lost'. Can be difficult if joining from outside an intake (i.e. newly qualified).

    Advice to Management

Remove some of the restrictions on taking holiday - we cannot all exist for 'business needs' only.

I have been working at Grant Thornton UK LLP full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Grant Thornton UK LLP has a great culture which distinguishes it from the 'Big 4' accounting firms by emphasising the importance of treating employees well; rewarding them generously, providing a network of support, providing flexibility and by treating each employee as important as the next, rather than being just another number.

The firm has grown remarkably in the last 3 years, which is largely due to the firm's attitude to it's clients. The firm is aiming to not just be an auditor but to be a 'trusted advisor', unlocking the potential for growth in their clients and providing sound business advice that will help the client move forward.

The firm is looking to continue to grow and it is an exciting time to be a part of the business. More and more high profile clients are being won on a regular basis, which is leading to more interesting audits.

Grant Thornton is ambitious and wants to continue to grow which makes them an attractive prospect to any potential new starter.

The financial rewards that the firm offers are also extremely competitive.

There are also plenty of opportunities to move around the business, into different service lines such as: corporate finance, transaction advisory and tax; as well as secondment opportunities abroad as the firm is a member of Grant Thornton International with offices in all of the major countries around the world.

    Cons

It is sometimes difficult to manage a healthy work/life balance due to the demands of the job and this is becoming increasingly more difficult as more and more clients are won, however, it is extremely rewarding when a high profile audit is completed on time and to the required standard.

This is, however, similar for most top 10 accountancy firms and so is not a direct reflection on Grant Thornton but rather an inherent characteristic of the job and the industry.

The job is also becoming more and more challenging as the complexity and the size of the clients increase, although, many people at the firm are currently thriving in this environment and realising the benefits.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend Grant Thornton to anyone who would like to be part of an exciting, dynamic, high growth firm who are looking to do things a little differently to the competition.

Those people who do not want to be treated like just a number and want to be valued as an employee would really enjoy working for this firm.
