I worked at H&R Block for more than 10 years

    Pros

Well known and respected company. Excellent training in taxes. People Friendly environment. Like numbers and people, here is the place

    Cons

Business is seasonal and thus staffing is seasonal. Focus on Revenue over service has cost company clients and associates

    Advice to Management

Focus more on service and associate retention and less on increasing prices and add on services

    I worked at H&R Block

    Pros

Training excellent. Good customer philosophy. High energy in the bigger locations

    Cons

Hours part time on a per need basis for the company can't count on the hours. Don't have a choice of location in a district. Often assigned to locations that are difficult to get to

    Advice to Management

Do what you say. Hiring and promotions based on family or friend relationships. You get what you pay for.

I have been working at H&R Block for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Financially sound; well known brand

    Cons

The most political company I have ever worked for and you will get nowhere unless you play the Kansas City game. Hard / Smart / Results do not provide you peace of mind and / or job security. Only who likes you does.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the politics and listen to people and not through the surveys. Like really allow the safety zone to ask people how they feel about the initiatives, workload (overload) etc. and let it be safe. You will continue to lose top talent because to you all it's just about you in KC.

I have been working at H&R Block full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Used to be one of the best company's to work for in America because they had a family atmosphere, and really cared about their employees and clients.

    Cons

CEO has mandated that all employees have, and use the company's debit card "Emerald Card", or be terminated, even in States that this action was prohibited by Starte law. The company needs to be investigated by the Federal Trade Commission as well as the State Commissions as the District General Manager's were forced by the Regional Director's, under the guidance of the Market Vice President's, through the CEO to... ensure that all employees in their District's got an "Emerlad Card' or be subject to termination. Also, in May 2015, after the tax season, the company terminated employees who did not have their taxes completed by H&R Block. Married employees, whose spouses were having their taxes done outside of the company, were forced to choose between filing "married filing seperately", or convince their spouses to have their taxes done at H&R Block. Those that did not comply with this CEO's directive, were fired. In some cases these employees had been with the company from 7 to 20 years. Company's Sr. management, CEO, Market Vice Presidents from the East Coast and Central Markets do not possess the higher education levels necessary to be in their positions, and are self serving egotistical, managers. Neither of them have advanced degrees in business for people you would expect to be responsible for over 66% of the company's US operations. Anyone who goes against the grain is ostrcized, and written up to silence them. The company has grown far away from the values that the Founder's, Henry and Richard Bloch, stood for in treating their employees with respect.

    Advice to Management

Be prepared for mass exits and departuers of tenured District Genral Managers, as well as investigations into their trade practices which appear to be in violation of both federal and state laws.

I worked at H&R Block full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I was a District Manager and I enjoyed the flexibility that position allowed me. The bonus structure is amazing and attainable. The leadership style of upper management is very hands off. They allow you to run your district as a business.

    Cons

Too many layers of Leadership. There is a lot of red tape to get things done....such as performance manage your associates. There was never a great structure in place for personal development....especially of associates on the front line.

    Advice to Management

You ask your associates to give a lot, but sometimes you are not willing to give back.
