I worked at HEINEKEN USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Transparent and supportive culture
    Interest in professional/personal development
Perks - company car for sales, beer allowance, ample of time off
Lots of independence, at least when company performance is decent

    Cons

Lack of direction/direction changed every 6 weeks starting in October 2018
Insurmountable loss of market share and brand relevance.
Bonuses convoluted, impossible to hit. Company doesn't want to pay out when you do meet your KPIs if they were losing money in another part of the country.
Marketing pushes programs around "growth" trends like soccer and boxing, with no quantifiable ROI from investing in these programs.
Relationship with distributor network increasingly strained due to constant re-strategizing and goals that do not align.

    Advice to Management

Yes, the beer industry is suffering as a whole, but think long and hard of why Heineken and its brands were a success in the US market in the first place. (Hint: premier European import - a platform Stella Artois is successfully co-opting)
Reassess your target market - not every Hispanic in the United States is a Mexican who wants to drink Tecate or Dos Equis. Mostly Central Americans on the east coast with allegiance to their origin country's brands. Perhaps readdress key demographics for each brand based on what actually goes on in the market?
Stop outsourcing social media. Instagram, Facebook, etc are a mess! We are one of the only leading suppliers who don't have relevant sponsored content within the US market. You want to appeal to millennials? They're online, not in retail.
SEM technology is not applicable to individual markets. Different needs for different areas, you can't judge based on a underdeveloped technology that does not directly create or support ROI. As a result, salesforce manipulates information on SEM.
Hire an American CEO who understands the needs of import consumers in the US

    Pros

    Annual company trips
    Life balance

    Cons

Though Heineken is a pleasant company to work at they are in need of much change. Even though they have cut 15% of the sales workforce, management is the worst. First managers who were on the job were demoted and stayed in the company. A couple of managers were not well received by the distribution partners and are not good salesman and are out of touch with the retail game in the beer industry. Also as HR and higher ups are committed to keep 50% women workforce even though they were not qualified over many employees. Each distributor now has one woman on the job even though many other potential employees with more experience, better track record, and years of experience were thrown out the window. Heineken will continue to perform with poor brand health, poor management, and poor decisions. Heineken I beg and ask look at your top level employees. The cuts need to be up top not the bottom.

    Advice to Management

Maggie, look at your managers and management on all levels. Also as well managers who were just demoted. They are out of touch and do not know how to sell properly. Also as well EOE is waste of time. Just like the Freddie app. Get rid of the SEM app.

I worked at HEINEKEN USA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Paid weekly like clockwork. Plenty of opportunity for overtime hours during holidays and big weekends.

    Cons

Expected to work overtime through holidays and big weekends. Budgets were cut significantly when sales dropped resulting in jobs lost. Over 7yrs, pay rates did not increase while work loads did. New hires were paid the same as 10yr vets. Managers were hired from outside companies with zero knowledge of the brand, industry, teams, area, etc. while several qualified candidates were overlooked.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your teams - they know more about the markets than computerized charts.
Pay your staff appropriately and reward loyalty and experience. Trainers should earn more than the trainees.
Hire from within the company. Experience with your brand and teams goes a long way.
