I have been working at Hallett Retail part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Easy job, takes a chance on those without fashion experience.

    Cons

Awful pay, no benefits, not much contact with management, doing the managers jobs (figures and ordering stock) and work is alone.

    Advice to Management

Please consider the wage offered for the job we do.

I worked at Hallett Retail full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with other concession managers in the host store, other managers in the company were a definate mixed bag unfortunately!

    Cons

The company is very reluctant to invest any money into it's people, so labour turnover is really high. At one point I had to reduce someone onto a 3 hour contract, which is useless for both parties. The staff receive nothing, even a box of chocolates at Christmas from the company and they are very poorly paid. Sometimes you have to put in to get back out. The company is not struggling for money, we were told more than once about how Wendy Hallett had just bought a warehouse or bought a photo studio. Very demoralizing.

The relationship between Hallett and my House Of Fraser was awful, so a lot of time was spent as a go between and dealing with the issues about staff cover etc, as a lot of the time they didn't pay to cover the full working day.

    Advice to Management

This company could be as great as it aims to be in the mission statement, but for that you need to invest in your people.

I worked at Hallett Retail part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

20% discount across most full priced items
Nothing else really I'd say as I didn't enjoy my time here as i dreaded it daily!
    Staff incentives

    Cons

20% discount could be hard to use sometimes
    Minimum wage
Horrible manager who looks down on all employees
Extremely high staff turnover (knew someone who didn't even last two weeks)
Expected to come to work last minute at late notice for a 2 hour shift and made to feel like you can't say no.
Manager suited themselves and didn't care about anyone but them self.
They can't pay you sick pay as they don't pay high enough wages
Extremely low/ temporary contracts (4/5/6 hours)
Staff incentives were not fair for us employees on low contracts compared to manager as they always got lots of free items for selling lots which was almost impossible for us to do within two hour shifts. Also tended to find out about them after they had expired due to disorganisation
    No professionalism what so ever
You are expected to complete a lot of tasks within an extremely short 2 hour shift
Costed me more to travel to work than what I was earning
Managers rarely ever worked a late shift or a Sunday
I left due to stress and feeling bullied / harassed
Often left crying about having to come to work
I used to dread seeing my phone ring for it to be work, it was that bad

    Advice to Management

How have you not realised about the extremely high staff turnover in this company? It's ridiculous! My advice would be to remove managers (regardless of years working for you) and train them in how to act human. Improve pay as a lot of work is expected to be completed within a short space of time.
Provide permanent contracts with higher hours
I cannot stress enough how important it would be to have secret inspections as what goes on inside of the shop floor between managers and staff is ridiculous.

I have been working at Hallett Retail full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have a great area manager, who understands my workload and is really supportive. She helps out when instore rather than just giving a list. Love being able to work between 2 different sites selling clothing in Debenhams and jewellery in House of Fraser. Senior staff are interested in your career and what you're doing. Great team players in my teams. Working directly with various brands to stock your department is great. Wendy Hallett's vision for her company is so refreshing, it's great to see someone making a living from making others visions possible. (Making it possible for boutique style brands to trade in department stores with a high street presence).

    Cons

Sometimes the workload can be heavy for the hours available, but with a little time it's easy to get back on track. Unpaid overtime if over 37.5 hours.

    Advice to Management

Keep nuturing your staff. Reconsider pay scale for sales assistants/supervisors if you want staff that are going to stay and work hard. Look at staffing hours available for covering concessions so that it's not always a catch up game.
