Horrible management

Pros

Benefits were good. Some awesome coworkers, minus the one who was stalking me. I really loved helping my patrons. Lots of variety and challenge!

Cons

The management was the worst I have ever worked for. Arrogant, completely out of touch with their employees, trying to fix problems by restructuring the entire organization repeatedly, pandering to county commissioners rather than caring about their patrons and staff. There was also a strong anti-Minneapolis sentiment among upper management I found repugnant. Upper management are a bunch of white white women from the 'burbs. They loved to talk about the importance of diversity but balked at going to meeting in the scary, dirty city. I loved the diversity of the city branches and their elitist attitudes drove me crazy.

Pros

county has some great benefits and working in libraries in general is a good feeling. most people outside of management are fantastic and fun to work with

Cons

management is terrible, worst group of managers I have ever experienced. I had never been made to feel so worthless and unwanted as I did there. horrible people and not worth your passion and drive, they will crush you. I was told not to try collaborating with others and had a huge project tossed away after three years of work, with no path forward and no explanation. save yourself the hassle, find a more visionary library system.

Pros

You get to be around books and work with mostly literate people. The benefits are good, and being part of a union has proven to be valuable during this recession. Paid time off is reasonable and increases with seniority. Health care benefits are good, though premiums are more reasonable for single people than for families.

Cons

Working with the public always has its challenges- and its rewards. There isn't much room for meaningful advancement. Job descriptions expand but rarely contract. Wage freezes instituted during leaner times haven't been meaningfully compensated for. Equivalent staff in other area counties make more than we do. And if a toxic work environment is created by a supervisor, good luck getting that taken care of, despite a lot of Diversity, Respect, Anti-Harrassment, and Anti-Bullying Policies.
