I have been working at Hertfordshire County Council full-time

    Pros

They promote flexible working or smart working. You do get a lot of leave. Senior management are good when they are visible and not in back to back meetings.

    Cons

Although they promote flexible working then horrendous parking situation and lack of desks means that if you aren’t in the office by 9 you might as well go home again. There have been so many budget cuts people are at absolute breaking point, with too much work. The smart offices now mean there is no peer to peer support. There is a culture of just there to do your hours.

    Advice to Management

Don’t push through changes if you don’t give the staff the tools they need, they make good headlines and pretty pictures but in reality are driving staff away.

I have been working at Hertfordshire County Council part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Regular salary, Herts Rewards, Friendly Staff. Good starter job and looks good on CV. Good pension and death benefit.

    Cons

They claim to be family friendly but ultimately if you have young children you are considered a problem. Continuous flexible working can only be accessed by senior staff. Culture of bullying, micromanagement, intimidation, overworking staff. Support staff are treated like canon fodder and children, that can easily be replaced. Junior staff are treated second class but are expected to hold departments together... but are patronised and expected to stay late/get in early for no extra renumeration or thanks. The two day no sickness pay rule is awful: staff come into work sick/lose money or annual leave. Middle managers given too much power.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with staff about the place being short staffed instead of pressuring them to work harder, a more honest approach would be beneficial and boost morale. 1:to:1s allow managers to bully staff and should be monitored. Value the work which is completed instead of getting at staff for underperforming and create a more positive workplace by not taking training sessions out of annual leave.
