I have been working at Holland & Barrett Retail part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I've worked there for 8 months part time and it's the best job I've ever had. Lots of training opportunities which can increase your pay- all of the staff I've met are really lovely. I get plenty of overtime and expenses paid to travel and work in other local stores that need cover, so I've got to visit other places and meet people I wouldn't have otherwise! 25% discount which increases to 50% for a week near Christmas, on top of existing promotions. Commission if your customer engagement is high enough. Helping customers is very rewarding too.

    Cons

It can get stressful and your product knowledge does have to be extensive.

    Advice to Management

Offer employees travelling time to work at other stores! The only perk to doing it is the overtime but you can usually do that in your own store, so there's no real incentive. Helping out and meeting people is great but sometimes travelling can go over 2 hours each way and it's exhausting, especially when you end up doing it often.

I have been working at Holland & Barrett Retail full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are many great colleagues, particularly at store level

    Cons

Culture from Northern field Regional Management is terrible. Cowards and bullies that don't have a backbone or the ability to think for themselves. They want 10 / 10 store operations despite their 3 / 10 leadership.

    Advice to Management

Don't suggest area managers can't manage their time when you yourself are doing over 55 hours a week - it makes you sound stupid.

Learn to understand that your missed deadline, is not your teams problem.

    Treat people with respect

Good training although a little intense with deadlines

    Cons

Working on your own in a town of drug users who regularly come in and intimidate you. Company is more interested in making a higher profit than safety of staff.

    Advice to Management

Push for extra bodies for safety reasons.

I worked at Holland & Barrett Retail part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A lot of knowledge about nutrition and supplements through working day to day and the training that the company provides
Staff/colleagues are often really friendly, family-like environment since each store tends to employ less than 10 people
Feeling of fulfillment when you can help customers with their problem
Easily to progress in the company
Never bored if you work in a busier location
25% staff discount and 50% off for Christmas, discount is really good especially on top of the constant offers

    Cons

    High staff turnover
A lot of responsibility even on sales associates/supervisors
Pressure to sign up people to the loyalty card
The role requires a lot of self learning since there's exams you need to pass in-order to progress to be qualified to advise

    Advice to Management

Make the interview screening process much tougher so the company employs only the right people and not just anyone out of convenience. Quite often people lose motivation or have other responsibilities which is a result in the high staff turnover. The company should be more empathetic to their employees as their workplace is like a second home, so if the environment at work is not accommodating/fair it can lead to people wanting to quit like I did.
