I worked at Home Office full-time

    Pros

I was able to work on some really unique immigration problems that you just would not be able to work on anywhere else. Full of very smart people, I was one of the small minority at the time who didn't have at least a masters. Learnt a lot in my year there.

    Cons

Civil Service is a large an organisation as it gets, so things don't change quickly

I worked at Home Office full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Very friendly colleagues. Colleague train as well as possible given the material and facilities.

    Cons

Dirty offices, poor restaurant, very few workstations available, poorly appointed small workstations. No tea, coffee or drinks. Little or no procedure despite the importance of the work following legislation. Atrocious conditions basically for pittance pay.

I have been working at Home Office

    Pros

You learn a lot and get good experience but you don’t need to stay very long to get what you need out of it.

    Cons

Poor senior management, good managers are not valued. Competent staff are continually overloaded and not rewarded and poor staff are not dealt with. In some cases I have seen poor performance rewarded just because managers are too weak to have honesty conversations with difficult and obstructive people. Ministers are too demanding and unrealistic. Everything that is said about the Home Secretary and her unreasonable behaviour or completely true.

    No Opinion of CEO

I have been working at Home Office full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Benefits such as flexible working and pension. Looks good on cv and progression options. Interesting work.

    Cons

Low pay, shocking IT systems, obsession with political correctness is a witch hunt, political interference is knee jerk and counter productive. Can be bureaucratic. Hated by sections of the public.

I worked at Home Office full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Very inclusive - people at different levels are encouraged to give opinions, at least in the main office - The people are lovely, sometimes quiet but mainly because they are all so busy - Senior leadership team are very approachable- easy to talk the deputy directors and the director without feeling like your opinion isn't worthwhile - Flexible working and working from home is openly offered

    Cons

    - Given politically unstable environment, priorities are sometimes unclear - Takes a while for management to disseminate important information - Inconsistent allocation of work - some people have way too much on their plate whereas others at the same grade go for 2 your lunches and have several coffee breaks in a day
