      Pros

Job security and ability to move across to other departments within the civil service

      Cons

Bureaucratic, multicultural and political. Annual hours contracts reduce pensionable pay. Poor training, siloed job roles and little opportunity for CPD and advancement. Little value placed on qualifications, experience or current performance.

      Pros

I was able to work on some really unique immigration problems that you just would not be able to work on anywhere else. Full of very smart people, I was one of the small minority at the time who didn't have at least a masters. Learnt a lot in my year there.

      Cons

Civil Service is a large an organisation as it gets, so things don't change quickly

      Pros

Interesting work that's always making the headlines in the press. I feel I am making a difference and that my work is valued. Good team and location. Good pay and pension. Recommended.

      Cons

As with all civil service jobs, there are less perks than if you work in the private sector.

      Pros

I experienced a wide variety of work, including dealing with passengers as an Immigration Officer and meeting staff across the organisation as a Communications Officer.

      Cons

Pay has effectively been frozen since 2010 and there have been swingeing job cuts across the Civil Service leading to low morale and staff wanting to leave in droves

      Pros

There are some great people working here. In theory, excellent training is available if your manager doesn't take Almost a year before they allow you to do it!

      Cons

The bullying was intense and despite reporting it and flagging it up with the head of operations, the issues were not dealt with. Staff morale is low and staff turnover is high. Managers have favourites and all staff know who the favourites are. The favourites get away with a lot. I've never worked anywhere else that had so many staff on performance plans. On the whole, some great people work there but their lives are made miserable by spineless leadership team. Most of the leadership team have little or no experience outside the civil service. No transformational leadership to be found here!

1 star, would not go there again

      Pros

The main office on Marsham Street is near some decent pubs, which becomes an almost essential benefit once you've been there a while.

      Cons

One of the most gradist, elitist and sexist environments that I have ever worked in. There are some fantastic people working there who are stifled both by the local environment and ways of working. and the general Civil Service rubbish that goes on. Stack ranking staff reviews and competency based interview processes result in inappropriate outcomes and an overall aura of learned helplessness amongst staff.
