I have been working at Horizon Media full-time

    Pros

Cool company, growing fast and young environment.

    Cons

the pay is so low most people who work at the company entry level are commuting into the city and living at home with their parents. The culture in some of the departments is cliquey and feels like a college.

    Advice to Management

HR needs to work on how they can help employees who reach out for help. Increase pay if you want loyal employees.

I worked at Horizon Media full-time

    Pros

    - Decent office with lots of space to sit if you don’t want to sit at your desk
    - Coffee shop in the office that has overpriced but good coffee
    - Fooda is great in regard to convenience, though it can be pricey
    - Central location
    - Decent clients

    Cons

    - Incompetent management. Be prepared to do anything and everything outside of your scope for clients. Doesn’t matter if the company isn’t being paid for it. They don’t know how to say no. Leadership is passive aggressive, inappropriate and is incapable of doing lower level jobs, so they have no grasp of what the work is actually like and set lower level employees up for failure. Frequently lying to the client is just the start. Their delivery of information is completely useless. They’re not empathetic and do not care about your growth. They flit in and out of the office like it’s a part time job and drop everything for pitches even if their clients, who pay them, are suffering because of it.
    - Mediocre people. If you like to coast, you’ll thrive at Horizon. The laziest people on the team are promoted. If you’re lazy and actually do your job for 30 seconds, you’ll be praised like a baby taking their first steps. They’d rather promote incompetent people than hire new people and build stronger teams.
    - You’re tied to your title. Lower level employees are not be given opportunities beyond their title. It’s non negotiable with upper management and very poor business practice.
    - Everything in the office costs money. Want a drink at happy hour? Be prepared to pay for it in the name of charity. I get it, it’s a nice gesture, but it would be nice to have happy hours that we, as employees, don’t have to pay for once in a while too, especially because they serve their clients’ alcohol that doesn’t cost them a dime. There’s food in the office? Yes, fooda. Be prepared to pay for it. There’s a coffee shop in the office? Yes, The Local. Enjoy your $4 coffee. There’s a place called Snack Island? Yes, hope you brought your wallet.
    - Team building only exists outside of the office. You have to make an effort as a team to bond. Upper management doesn’t do anything in regard to that.
    - Extremely low pay. You have to be a senior and above to actually make money and you’ll still be paid less than anywhere else
    - Incompetent HR. They are not capable of even doing half their jobs. They will lie to you and never come with a plan of action to a meeting. In fact, most of the time, they don’t even show up to meetings. They won’t take action against anyone and will do nothing to stop conflict or build trust. I won’t ever work there again because of HR alone. Never mind the rest of it.
    - Prepare to not interact with anyone beyond your team. No one is social.
    - Work hours are EOD. Management will send you things at the last possible minute and expect you to make a miracle happen.
    - Managers spend more time in the gym than they do working.
    - Made up jobs = no future anywhere else.
    - Trainings are a joke. You’ll be forced into training that you’ll get absolutely nothing out of.
    - Reviews are catty, ruthless and unproductive. It will be a personal attack that will bring you emotionally down

    Advice to Management

Be better at everything. Stop promoting lazy people and giving lower level employees the power to be mediocre at their job. Retrain HR and fire people who lie. Rework management to actually function correctly. Say no to clients when they’re asking for things way beyond scope. Make people want to come to work everyday by providing resources, support, and opportunities. Stop allowing people to run the company when they’ve proven to be incompetent. Check in with employees to ensure management is doing their job. Read managers’ reviews of employees and do not allow personal attacks to continue. Step in and be present. Learn lower level employees jobs to understand their workload instead of turning a blind eye. Give people more reason to stay by being supportive. Encourage team bonding in the office. Give employees every tool to succeed. Put your trust in the right managers, not just the managers that coast along. Stop mandatory trainings and bring departments together. Listen.

    Pros

Beautiful offices, convenient to the subways - but beauty is only surface. There are some genuine people who are really cool and care.

    Cons

Dont believe these super positive gushing reviews. HR writes them to cover up very long hours with unreasonable deadlines and exhausted over worked employees. Cliquey teams that often freeze co-workers out if they dont like them or get along. Forget about going to HR thats a sure road to getting fired.
