I worked at Howdens Joinery full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Salary, bonus and working hours ok. Customers are great.

    Cons

No support, guidance or training. Be careful which colleagues to trust. Wrong ones will “stab you in the back”. Lying, bullying, verbal aggression. Retail in the 90s. Some depots are great some are hell, like the one I was at. You’ll loose money on fuel. Out of date IT. Some depots shed reps quicker than hair loss. Had to work every Saturday, 5 and a half days a week. Most other depots did alternate Saturday.

    I worked at Howdens Joinery

    Pros

Bonus, however this is so volatile and based solely on the whole depots performance and margin that it probably just makes up for the notoriously low wages that are paid!

    Cons

    - Poor management throughout both in depots and above. Management don’t know how to people manage so try and instruct you to do something that they haven’t a clue about. Area managers have a huge hierarchy system and think anyone else is beneath them, forgetting that the staff are essentially what pay their hefty bonuses and turn the cogs for the whole business. - Managers bullying staff, calling them fat and belittling them ensuring staff are aware that they can be sacked at any point almost wanting you to thank them for the opportunity. - Unrealistic targets, you can’t call people repeatedly in a month as this will annoy builders off however this is expected by higher management despite being unaware how it works themselves, the calls don’t attract people to come in as much as they seem to think! If a customer can’t take a kitchen at a specific time this should be respected, there’s not always kitchen sales continuously, putting pressure on the staff to hit these is demotivating the staff and jeopardising future business by being to ‘pushy’. If someone doesn’t want an account you can’t force this, how many new trades people is there to believed to be each month!? The higher management are only concerned about numbers going completely against the business model and putting unnecessary pressure on the reps in an already isolating job. - Everyone for themselves attitude. Although I can’t say this for every single branch, however what I’ve seen it’s very much the case! We’re all working of the same bonus, as a team so why isolate people slagging them off to managers to gain your extra slice of bonus if a target hasn’t been hit! - October sale, there’s a huge push on the October sale meaning you work every Saturday, all week and often late nights and early mornings! This is totally incentivised with the huge bonus you’ll get just before Christmas, however this bonus is definitely not huge in relation to the time you’ve put in and how much pressure everyone has on them to churn figures out! - Staff aren’t listened to and management from each level are very much stuck in their ways, listen to your staff and I can assure you you’ll see ways of working that work so much more efficiently!
