I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time

    Pros

Prestigious company, some nice little perks (swag, screenings), some great clever people

    Cons

Awful micromanaging management, Poor work environment, utter absence of respect for staff, constant failed promises that things will improve, huge conflicts of ego and nepotism.

    Advice to Management

Take a long, hard look at how your IT is managed, listen to the feedback from your staff, work harder to give staff a reason to stay (20 days holiday & a barebones benefits package, really?), follow through on plans and projects PROPERLY, rather than leaving everything held together with string, most importantly, remove the micromanagement.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Talented artists (for the most part).

    Cons

Insane hours, zero staff appreciation, poorly managed, a lot of egos, very corporate atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

7 day weeks and 12+ hour days should not be considered as normal regardless of client commitments and looming deliveries. Creative leads need to be managed correctly which in turn will reduce pressure on artists and production.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Relax, non challenging work environment. Great for stable paycheck with little fuss. Year round tropical weather.

    Cons

Nothing challenging ever goes to Singapore. Not a place for ambitious artists to be. No chance to increase income - no overtime pay. Time off in lieu cannot be cashed out.

    Advice to Management

It's time for de-layering. You have way too many dinosaurs on the shelf.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Generally great people, good projects, nice perks.

    Cons

Leadership constantly assures staff of commitment to SF location, but bulk of work keeps going to competing divisions in Vancouver and London, and head count continues to go down.

As such, management values its talent substantially less these days. No opportunities to advance, and raises have been replaced by meager bonuses. There's been a real disconnect/disinterest in day-to-day artist experiences and performance by management, reflected by a recent move to eliminate what little performance review system we had. Training program is not what it once was. Just talking to other artists, bad management tendencies, such as favoritism, have become very common. Getting onto the few slots on the hot project has become rather political.

    Advice to Management

With all the incentives in Vancouver, Montreal, and London, it is admittedly tough running a VFX house in San Francisco. It seems like there's a lot of work in smaller US films that can be done (too small to be worthwhile working overseas?). Management also needs to change its DNA. It doesn't need to get all sweet and cuddly, but it does need to make an effort to really engage with productions/artists more to know who's really contributing and who isn't.
