I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The caliber of the people working there is high. ILM is the best at what it does!

    Cons

There is HIGH turnover in production. The salaries are laughably low and coordinators are underappreciated in general. You have to leave the company and return if you want to get promoted beyond Coordinator.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Working with some great people who bring their talent to a company that sorely lacks respect for it.

    Cons

Everything. Broken pipeline, kept on life support by legacy ILMers who refuse to change. Horrible deadlines and under-bid shows that cause unmanageable chaos. Clients are verbally abusive and disrespectful to the artists making their films and ILM does NOTHING ... because clients are money. So, minimize the employees and ignore them, clients are all that matters no matter how crazy, incompetant or rude they are. ILM has become a shadow of itself, favoring clients who meddle with pixels over and over and over until the artists lose their families, health and sanity from being overworked. ILM is just another failed VFX house propping up a broken industry enabling hack filmmakers who have no idea what they are doing and unable to allow VFX artists to do their best work because they are micromanaged into oblivion.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The story of this place and the people that started everything is so inspiring.

    Cons

No morale No culture anymore, it's turning into a production line Long hours You will get emails about how the company is thriving, how successful the projects are thanks to you, but you will no get bonuses anymore. A promotion is just impossible, Managers don't really pay attention to who is who, they usually promote the whiners and not the most talented or hard workers. If you are not a supervisor nobody will pay attention to your suggestions or feedback. Salaries are awful no work-life balance in San Francisco, the most expensive city in the world. The work is now done in Vancouver mostly, San Francisco only gets the left-overs Not a healthy competition environment. Trying to save money they turned the work areas into a homeless camp.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Not challenging, little overtime, good perks from Disney, working with some of the best people in the industry

    Cons

Not challenging. Even if you're senior, you'll mostly get junior work when you start. Managers can be very impersonal. No chance for advancement. Embarrassingly low wages, and they'll expect you to still be able to take lots of time off between projects. Almost no raises given, so with inflation, you end up making less money over time. You feel like a cog in the machine. Employees are disposable. They advertise annual bonuses, but then end up not giving them out. You get constant emails about how Disney is making billions of dollars each year, and see how the CEOs have multi-million dollar wages, but then they nickel and dime all of their employees. Much of the software is over-engineered and unnecessarily complicated and out dated.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Not one besides the fact it's got this big name and good benefits.

    Cons

If you are not friends with the right group of people you are out. You might say that's any company out there but I've been at almost all of the big companies in the industry. Nothing even comes close the how ILM works.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You get some perks, and sometimes if you are lucky you get to work on a nice project, and if you are very very lucky you get a nice shot and if you are very very very lucky, the sup will not take it before you finish it to give it to one of his preferred accolytes and call it his own and add it on his reel.

    Cons

Everything. It is ruled by americanised culture, high school back-stabbing and rumours. You need to have your nose completely browned out to get a few decent shots. You need to take condescending treatment very well cause even if you are smarter or better learned (very easy thing at ILM) than the higher ups, they will regardless tell you how to do a roto...that's right, petty ignorant behaviour left and right. Your artist input is a goner in this place, no wonder why the vfx community states this is where compers come to die. Pay is inferior for the kind of work you do here where you gotta be a do-it-all and jack-of-all-trades. End of year they will tell you how well they made in the Billions but they NEVER give you part of that money which you actually made them earn.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Relax, non challenging work environment. Great for stable paycheck with little fuss. Year round tropical weather.

    Cons

Nothing challenging ever goes to Singapore. Not a place for ambitious artists to be. No chance to increase income - no overtime pay. Time off in lieu cannot be cashed out.
