I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You get some perks, and sometimes if you are lucky you get to work on a nice project, and if you are very very lucky you get a nice shot and if you are very very very lucky, the sup will not take it before you finish it to give it to one of his preferred accolytes and call it his own and add it on his reel.

    Cons

Everything. It is ruled by americanised culture, high school back-stabbing and rumours. You need to have your nose completely browned out to get a few decent shots. You need to take condescending treatment very well cause even if you are smarter or better learned (very easy thing at ILM) than the higher ups, they will regardless tell you how to do a roto...that's right, petty ignorant behaviour left and right.... Your artist input is a goner in this place, no wonder why the vfx community states this is where compers come to die. Pay is inferior for the kind of work you do here where you gotta be a do-it-all and jack-of-all-trades. End of year they will tell you how well they made in the Billions but they NEVER give you part of that money which you actually made them earn.

    Advice to Management

Start giving bonuses to hires no matter the contract length, it's immoral what you are doing. Maybe you need undercover people to check the hire ups behaviour? Sing, Van are a mess, people need to get axed.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

-have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects -some disney perks, movie screenings and merchandise given -majority of the co-workers are professional and friendly

    Cons

-takes years to move up the ladder -the shots for this site is often boring and is subject to last minute work given from other sites -OT during weekdays is uncompensated -almost every project requires weekend work which is compensated with time off but the time off often has difficulty getting approved

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Some of the projects are good - There is a gym - There are some cool people to work with - There is free food and drinks sometimes - You get to see crew screenings of movies for free

    Cons

    - You get harassed by junkies and homeless people right outside of the office - There is a LOT of overtime on every project and it's still getting worse - People from other studios are hired for lead or supervisor jobs instead of promoting people already there - There are a lot of double standards: 1. Friends of management can say and do things other people would get fired for 2. Women bad at their jobs will... get a different position or a promotion and keep getting paid to do a bad job, but men would get fired for the same thing 3. If you aren't friends with management or the right supervisors you don't work on the best projects or get good shots or get promoted even if you are talented

    Advice to Management

    - Get rid of the people there because of favoritism and politics and get rid of the management and supervisors doing that - Promote more people already working there instead of strangers from other studios - Fix how much overtime everyone has to work on every project

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for less than a year

    Pros

They were bought by Disney (Now a chinese owned company) as such, all the pros are gone.

    Cons

There is no recognition of artistic efforts, you can have 10 years experience and they still treat you like a junior and they pay you peanuts, only the people close to the sups get nice shots, the rest gets garbage filler not even good for a reel, the whole recruitment process is a mess and it bodes what the rest of the experience will be like, it is like a bad omen, do NOT waste your lifetime in this company, this... is NOT the ILM of such great renown, this is now like MPC (owned also by Disney), STAY AWAY.

    Advice to Management

This is not a chain product manufacture, we are not getting electronic chips ready for shipping, this is a creative industry, do us all a favor before you drive us into a syndicate, please get it straight or get out.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic

    Pros

Nice people, hours aren't too bad compared to other places, looks good on resume, the building is very cool, and they try and have a pleasant work enviroment.

    Cons

Salary is not very competitive, seems to only have the work that SF doesn't want to do, boring shots to work on, inexperienced supervisors who play favorites and seem to have no idea how to actually lead a team.

    Advice to Management

Do not hire senior people and then give them mid-level work. Try to get supervisors from SF to move to Vancouver as the ones in Vancouver are not very good (no management skills, will tell you one thing and then act like they didn't ask you to do it, will sometimes hold back important info, limited experience at a highend facility.). Also, stop calling it "automony" and just admit that your sups can't lead and you... expect artists to be their own leaders and coordinators between departments. Start paying better and give some good shots and sequences to Vancouver. ILM in Vancouver is coasting on their name. Most other places pay better and actually have more interesting work. Also, it's bad for moral when you hold company meetings and mention all the parties and screenings in SF and nothing is being done in Vancouver. Realize that people talk and when other houses are paying senior people $4-10 more an hour don't get upset and STOP blacklisting people who give constructive feedback.
