    Cons

Constant funding cuts meant priorities often changed or future plans were scrapped.

    Advice to Management

I worked at Islington Council full-time

    Pros

    Career progression is readily available

    Cons

Job security is constantly under threat as a local authority employer

    Advice to Management

    Need to improve staff morale

I worked at Islington Council full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Teaching is a rewarding career

    Cons

Just the tip of the iceberg....
Management said terrible things about other staff, such as that most teachers at the school were bad at their jobs and even that one of the nursery staff was a ‘snake in the grass’ and then promoted this staff member.
Management was incompetent and couldn’t get a bunch of pegs nailed to a wall for children’s bags.
Lack of resources meaning large out of pocket expenses for teachers.
No clear line of authority with staff played against one another and certain staff not in management apparently encouraged to act as if they were in charge.

    Advice to Management

    New management is needed.

I worked at Islington Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pleasant team atmosphere. Realistic management, but as with most Social Work teams there is a push for performance indicators such as Visits and PEPs being on time. Caseloads, although hectic seem to be better than most Local Authorities. Goood training and good holidays.

    Cons

Systems for working out of the office could perhaps be improved. Also there could be more opportunities to have interaction throughout the different teams, as they;'re all working to achieve the same goals

I worked at Islington Council (More than 8 years)

    Pros

diverse and attempt to promote equal opportunity

    Cons

there was lots of uncertainty surrounding staff positions and senior managers are only after securing their position

    Advice to Management

Because you do lots of pen pushing, does not mean there is equal availability. Talented employees have left or are leaving because of lack of opportunity

I worked at Islington Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are lots of good people, and the environment i worked in was generally open, positive, supportive and with reasonable freedom to act.

    Cons

Obviously councils are subject to extreme budge pressure these days, so be prepared to work with that as a constant backdrop.

Some departments also tend to be quite cold.

    Advice to Management

    Listen!
    You need to champion diversity

I have been working at Islington Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a busy inner London local authority

    Cons

The follow through on a lot of things just isn't there. The cuts make working very stressful.

    Advice to Management

Work on career prospects or else employees will go elsewhere.
