I worked at Islington Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pleasant team atmosphere. Realistic management, but as with most Social Work teams there is a push for performance indicators such as Visits and PEPs being on time. Caseloads, although hectic seem to be better than most Local Authorities. Goood training and good holidays.

    Cons

Systems for working out of the office could perhaps be improved. Also there could be more opportunities to have interaction throughout the different teams, as they;'re all working to achieve the same goals

I worked at Islington Council (More than 8 years)

    Pros

diverse and attempt to promote equal opportunity

    Cons

there was lots of uncertainty surrounding staff positions and senior managers are only after securing their position

    Advice to Management

Because you do lots of pen pushing, does not mean there is equal availability. Talented employees have left or are leaving because of lack of opportunity

I worked at Islington Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are lots of good people, and the environment i worked in was generally open, positive, supportive and with reasonable freedom to act.

    Cons

Obviously councils are subject to extreme budge pressure these days, so be prepared to work with that as a constant backdrop.

    Listen!

I have been working at Islington Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a busy inner London local authority

    Cons

The follow through on a lot of things just isn't there. The cuts make working very stressful.

    Advice to Management

Work on career prospects or else employees will go elsewhere.

I have been working at Islington Council part-time

    Pros

Work is quite easy and routine
Management is for the most part quite nice
Customers are pleasant to deal with

    Cons

Often too many staff and not enough work to go around
Some managers are too over the top and insist on doing work when none is available to do
Not much resources or direction into future of the library service

    Advice to Management

Figure out who and what kind of service you want to be
Remove inefficient managers from front line duties

I have been working at Islington Council full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of opportunities for development especially as the organization is constantly changing to adapt to it's volatile environment. The people there are also great to work with, support, polite and professional. Flexible working arrangements are also very generous.

    Cons

It can get quite pressured particularly around year-end and month-end, so it can feel overwhelming at times.

    Good transport links
    Knowledgable staff members

    Cons

    In the YOS team

    No induction
    Lack of support
    Weak senior leadership
Unsafe when working with young people in the community
No login/email address/mobiles given, esp for lone working

    Advice to Management

Speak to front line workers, especially to make sure people are safe working with YP.
