I have been working at J D Wetherspoon part-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pay isn’t too bad. You do meet some good people there, to work with and regulars. 20% discount off shift at any spoons comes in handy, as does the 50% an hour before, after and on shift. It’s ideal for those looking to top up the bank, as a uni student it’s helped.

    Cons

Not somewhere to make a career. Management are two-faced and hypocritical. Staff often don’t turn up but who can blame them. Customers think they run the place. Don’t get paid holiday on time or even correctly most of the time. Long hours/shifts demotivates everyone and then we get hours cut so not everyone gets their expected hours. Staff are often cliquey and a lot of gossip goes around.

    Advice to Management

Find better incentives, like better motivation with shorter but more frequent shifts for those who prefer it (but some prefer longer shifts if they have to travel longer to make their shift worthwhile). People skills and communication within the management team could be improved, there’s a lot of hierarchy issues and people on power missions.
