I have been working at J Sainsbury part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

First off - this really depends on the branch. I've heard horror stories from other branches, friends leave to join another branch having moved after university only to quit because they couldn't stand it. It all comes down to management in a particular branch.

Generally a fun place to work - contracts and hours to suit all sorts of people. Managers are usually good with giving out overtime and there is scope to change up your hours temporarily or permanently if people leave/demand requires it etc.

The stores can be lovely environments to work in - we raise money for Red Nose Day etc. so there's always a night out or raffle or bake sale going on, it's nice. Equally, you can just show up and do your hours and leave if that's what you need.

Pay is good - currently above minimum wage for under 25s (£7.66) and the store discount (which can also be used at Argos and Habitat) of 10% is achieved after just 3 months of service - occasionally the discount percent is raised to celebrate great sales etc. - this is great, Sainsbury's has lovely food!

    Cons

Training is essentially non-existent and if undertaken, boring and seemingly pointless. It's a shelf stacking, basic retail post so this isn't that shocking.

Extremely strict policies on appearance, lateness and sick days that are usually strictly (but fairly) enforced. You will be searched regularly so never carry items like phones on to the shop floor, don't be late etc. - basic things but bear this in mind.

    Pros

Great atmosphere to work in, good to build people skills

    Cons

Very timed, need to let us have a 10-15% over limit. As sometime can finish the work faster than other times because of less customers in the store/ interacting with you etc

    Advice to Management

People above general assistants role should take more responsibility instead of blaming the G.A's

I worked at J Sainsbury part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Particularly easy going as I was located in a large store, especially with sorting out work around my university education.

    Cons

Some work can become highly repetitive with little option to move around the store into other roles.

    Advice to Management

Create an easier system for staff to recommend changes.

    Pros

Lots of overtime. Most of the management ok.

    Cons

They expect a lot out of you for just above minimum wage.
They want you to be flexible and often change work shifts at short notice.

    Advice to Management

The Store Management doesn't even know anything about me as a person. They show know interest in their people which is quite sad. If it wasn't for my name badge most of them wouldn't know anything about me. At my last job my manager use to spend at least a few mins a week chatting to each colleague and getting to know them.

    Pros

Friendly staff, shifts go fast when having active change.

    Cons

Boring when on checkouts on a slow day, also when your the youngest on checkouts - always picked to go out on trolleys.

    Advice to Management

Notice that your employees are not enjoying work, try to invite change to shift patterns,
