      If It’s Your Only Option

      22 Jun 2021 - Photographer/Sales Associate

      Pros

It’s a job that looks good on a resume.

      Cons

Everything else. •Scheduling is a mess, good luck making plans. I don’t know when I work until the day before, sometimes the day of. •Labor allowance is NEVER enough. I never get breaks on the weekends, even though I open & close (usually between 7 & 9 hours) •For the things we deal with (I come home every single night hating my job), we are not paid nearly enough. •It’s not real photography. There’s no creative control. You’re extremely limited to what you’re graded on by corporate. •Bosses literally tell you to lie to customers in the camera room so you can make them take more photos than they came in for just so you’re graded better (the grading scale is beyond stupid). •Bosses will easily get time off but you won’t. It’s truly just not worth it.

good "foot in the door" job

      Pros

You learn a lot about professional studio photography and the environment of the studio. its a good "foot in the door" job for sure, because they teach you a lot of useful information and techniques that will carry over to any other studio in the future. what you learn in training; -how to work in the studio environment; including how to use a DSLR camera, photography techniques, proper lighting techniques, set designing, and utilizing props -the software for quickly editing photos; even though its a corporate program, you can learn basic photo editing and framing with their very basic software. -how to conduct a professional photoshoot; how to set up the shoot, what the more common portrait poses are, how pose subjects, framing subjects, directing your clients during the process -You also learn a lot about photographer and client relations; booking appointments, building a clientele, confirming appointments, helping clients through the printing and designing process -Sales. most of what i have to say about sales goes under cons so i'll save it for there. the "pro" of learning sales is the techniques for pitching ideas and walking clients through the package selection.

      Cons

Rushed training; the training program is only 2 weeks and requires you to book 5 photoshoots with friends and family for "free" but also pressures you to pressure them into making a purchase. The entire sales pitch. The prices they offer are outrageous, ESPECIALLY for how little they pay their photographers who are also the sales associates. As a professional independent photographer who knows the process from shoot to shipment, it's absolutely disgusting how much they charge for their packages. And you're pressured by management to do whatever you can to make your client buy the most expensive packages, going as far as even suggesting to confuse the customers suring the sales pitch by running through all the packages quickly and "explaining" the "printing process" to justify the absurd cost. the customer has no idea what they are going to pay until its all finalized and rung up at the register. its grossly abusive to the customers by being intentionally vague.

      Pros

None, there are no pros to working here.

      Cons

Everything is a con, they over schedule and yell at you when its behind and you'll only find out if your working the night before your shift.
