Pros

Coworkers are nice, real people. Everyone realizes we're all in the muck together. Location is good, parking is provided. Surrounding area is cute and accessible by public transport. Pretty dope healthcare plan. Logan office seems nice from when I spoke to people there. Sometimes there were buffet style lunches, though those, I'd hope, are done forever. The software you build actually helps society.

Cons

Oh boy, I didn't plan or writing this review, but after listening on my SO's meetings, now that everyone is at home, and how much their company actually cares about it's employees, it made me so mad to have dealt with this place. I'll start with minor things. When lunches were provided, dietary restrictions were never assessed. Sometimes there'd be no non-vegan/vegetarian options. No gluten free options. Lighting in the office was inconsistent, depending on who walked in first it could be bright or dim in the office. The office itself was not decorated at all except for the late 80s mall fountain in the middle surrounded by fake, dusty plants. No visual stimulus or happiness existed on the walls. No windows in the main underling area. Now for stuff that actually matters: Upper management is cold and heartless. Often never speaking to lower level employees and when a problem did arise, the VP would gaslight people in order to avoid addressing any real complaints. When the CEO was loudly making some insensitive remarks about his employees abilities and then some racially charged jokes, it was buried, employees being told "you didn't hear him correctly". Leading up to COVID-19, employees were told "work from home will not be considered," by highest management. For a job that's entirely VPNing into other offices around the nation. Project managers have no real power for their team's policies, and instead have to act as mouth pieces of the CEO and VP because, as was mentioned earlier, they never spoke to lower level employees. Going into lockdown and actually working from home, the company provided the employees with nothing. The only thing that could be brought home was the laptops/computers, no monitors or accessories that the company provided. Communication is just bi-weekly "we won't open for another two weeks." There is no support given to the workers of the company. Other companies have been providing some sort of stipend for making your home office more comfortable, mental health checks, even sending gift cards to local food places. Journal Tech, instead, on June 22nd asking employees to start returning to the office, while cases were, and as of writing continue, to shoot up in Los Angeles. They even had the gall to tell people to be "covid security" and make sure no one is sick. After an uproar, it was nixed. But why did they think that it's a good/safe/okay/mentally sound idea? This place is a toxic hellscape. There's a reason they only hire people just starting their careers in software dev, they know they can get away with more because of your uncertainty in your new path. They take advantage of their employees. It's bad. Don't work here.

Pros

Flexible schedule-sometimes didn't even go in at all and no one noticed or cared. A lot of people work 5 hour days, with no reprimand. Travel was great, I got all the perks of credit cards and points, with full reimbursement from Journal. People are great. Anyone who wasn't a manager is incredible and fun to work with.

Cons

Management is delusional. They offer no training, instead saying 'find your own learning opportunities', but when you do, they shoot it down and say no. They invest no time in teaching the product or how to demo. The RFP process is a joke. Basically, the company vice president writes everything and refuses to hand off anything. Management micromanages, but does not teach staff or give them tools to do what needs to be done. And the CEO cut the 'entertainment' budget to nothing, which was the last scrap of team building and culture. Promotions and raises are non-existent, and no retirement plan at all (not even one you can contribute to. Employees have to go outside of Journal) is not okay.

Pros

I'm very happy with my particular team and supervisor. The company has recently changed CEOs and already we're seeing some exciting changes including project completion bonuses and company profit sharing. I feel like an important member of my team, and I have been rewarded for hard work with pay raises and more trust. Once I had a good idea with my role, my supervisor has been pretty flexible for the times I need to help out with my family and is mostly concerned about the work I complete and not so much with the hours I'm in the office. Being able to travel also helps from getting too bored from being in an office every day.

Cons

Expensive healthcare, no 401K, onboarding/training is unstructured and puts most of the responsibility on the new employee. I felt confused and didn't have a good idea of my role for about 1 year. Documentation is incomplete and it's unclear who is responsible for creating clear, organized documentation.
