I worked at Kainos full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Some great people at the company. Really top notch engineers and technical architects who you can learn a lot from. Some very interesting projects and tech stacks. Travel opportunities are plentiful (which is a perk if you like travel) Generous when it comes to working from home. Pretty good career progression if you put the effort in. There's no doubt about it; Kainos still has a good reputation... in Ireland. It's still a good name to have on your CV.

    Cons

Company dropped out of Top 100 companies this year on the Times list, but still implies it is a top 100 company. This is disingenuous. Travel opportunities are plentiful (which is a negative if you don't like or cannot travel). There is a sense that Kainos will take on any customer, even if the customer is dreadful, difficult to work with and the work is awful and it has a detrimental effect on frontline... staff. This seems to have become more of an issue after the company went public. Pay is definitely an issue, but that's not only a problem with Kainos. I think the issue is with the notorious "benchmarking" tech companies in Belfast do. They only seem to benchmark against the old boys club (companies who have been here 15+ years). So the likes of Liberty, Kainos and AllState think they are on point with tech sector pay in Belfast, but in reality the tech sector in Belfast is booming and many new American based companies coming in are simply paying far more. So, benchmarking and salaries is an area of concern. Which is part of... Retention. While Kainos does have amazing people, it isn't doing that well retaining them. Incredibly experienced, highly skilled staff are simply walking out the door for better jobs and opportunities at rates which would make most People/HR teams shudder. On call can be an issue for teams, but again, this isn't just a Kainos issue. On call can be a major pain point for a lot of tech professionals in lots of companies.

    Advice to Management

You are doing a lot of things really well, but you need to really make retention your number 1 priority. If you flood the place with inexpensive, inexperienced 18 year olds, that might make your company more profitable for a while but longer term top talent will simply go elsewhere and your company will suffer accordingly.

I worked at Kainos full-time for less than a year

    Pros

flexible working - inclusive of working from home which is more encourage when you are sick - do not agree with working form home when you not fit to work at all

    Cons

unhealthy working environment - secretive and discriminating and it comes from the top, 'friends club', lacking transparency in every people process, double standards applies - different rules for different employees, rules are made on the go Company wants young inexperienced people who are easy to manipulate and manage. if you have your own minds and can think independently you will never fit working... standards are low in some departments more than others the Company has great opinion on the job market, but my experience is completely different - just the opposite lack of knowledge and ignorance is a excuse for doing things wrong, but the worst is choice being made not to fix it... good guys are pushed out, its easier than deal with inability to do right things. the morale are so down for most employees, that is not even anymore worth talking to managers Absolutely nothing is being done, just an opposite. if you are honest you better keep quiet if you have nowhere to go to.... The honestly is not welcomed and teh constructive feedback is being silenced before goes higher in hierarchy. Department I worked in was very discriminating and secretive to ensure people are not aware of Company knowingly doing things wrong. Only man are considered as specialists - woman must prove herself, and often even that the attitude or approach does not change.... this is probably one of the most unequal employers I have ever worked for.

I have been working at Kainos full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Despite salaries not being where they should be the company is pretty cool to work for. Changes have taken place as of late to make the environment better. We have time to wind down with the team and office and there are always people on hand to support in various matters. The end of year review process seems painless compared to other businesses but the promotions element needs to be clearer. Overall pretty... decent. Lots of socials, recently an office party with games and a basketball shootout organised by someone in the office which I thought was great. Free fruit and cereal. Nespresso coffee machines. Work from home opportunities.

Very Belfast central. Promotions are not clear

    Advice to Management

Look into how people outside of Belfast can move up the ladder a little more closely.

I have been working at Kainos full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Free fruit and occasional free drinks

    Cons

What does workplace culture say about an organization? A lot I think. In Kainos Worksmart there's a poisonous blame culture (especially senior management), chronic overworking, tone deaf approach to staff feedback, no interest in staff career development (but plenty of lip service from the top). CEO is a very nice man who tries to paper over the cracks with a smile and free ice cream but appears impotent when it... comes to sorting out the structural problems. Divisional senior management rule the roost and use his speeches on staff wellbeing/customer focus for toilet paper. As the stinking pile grows the corporate leadership flush it away with a smile and a glossy new post on social media.

I have been working at Kainos full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Kainos is a fantastic, forward-thinking company that aspires to take on technology challenges of the present and future but while aspiring to be an industry leader in the technology space it is very aware that it is it's people that make the company and account for its successes and as such.

    Cons

As a consulting company with a large portfolio projects locally and globally, the job entails a substantial mount of travel.

    Advice to Management

ion and profits Please keep up the good work you do in putting your people first above company success, expansion and profit.
