I worked at Keele University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The small size of the university promotes close working across disciplines and between academic and professional support staff. There are lots of opportunities to develop new skills and experience. Teaching development is taken seriously and student development is effectively designed.

    Cons

Things fall between the cracks and there are few effective specialists in any area. Procedures are often impractical or overlooked. Resources are stretched and this can lead to high workloads and expectations of do-it-yourself in many areas. Very limited mentoring or promotion prospects. No effective training or investment in staff.

    Advice to Management

Hands-on and realistic management practice need to be employed over 'vision' and leaving people to muddle through. A focus on delivery of core services is needed over ambitious language and this needs to be clear and fairly managed with staff.

    Advice to Management

-all duty managers and upper management seriously require training on people management

I have been working at Keele University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Flexible working hours. - Never short of things to do. - 4 extra days annual leave after 5 years service. - 5 Additional discretionary days ( usually over Christmas). - Large scenic campus with woodlands.

    Cons

    - Not many career development opportunities if you stay in post, arrive with a grade you are happy with or you'll feel the need to move on to somewhere else eventually. - parking can be a bit of a pain if you need to start a bit later. - Certain areas of the IT Department are currently under staffed. - IT Budgets can be tight at times, be prepared to bring out the gaffer tape. - If you show an interest... about how to solve a problem then you automatically end up being the owner of that problem and hence forth it is now your problem forever more.

    Advice to Management

    - It's worth remembering that a lot of the time, some staff members are already doing important work, when they are expected to pick up new projects, especially when people have left who have not been replaced. - Work needs to be more fairly distributed by evaluating each individual staff members current workload, as this often doesn't get accounted for.
