I worked at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The lifestyle on campus is quiet and allows for a lot of time outside of work to read, focus on personal development, exercise, and travel. I was a single employee, but many of my colleagues seemed to have an ideal situation for raising children and growing young families. The work life presented its fair share of challenges, but if one had great ideas and new how to foster positive relationships with the right people, the ideas had opportunities to be supported and develop into real initiatives and solutions. The relatively small campus and network of departments allowed for many relationships to be forged to accomplish meaningful work. Some higher level administrators wish to support those who report to them and look for ways to help them professionally grow and develop competencies.

    Cons

The opportunities for creative and innovative ways to do one's work were innumerable, but sometimes the problem came from others blocking good ideas from developing into practice. Some people in higher positions may not hold the vision and guts necessary to take a risk and try innovative new ideas out of fear that they won't get to keep their coveted positions if it doesn't go according to plan. This fear leads to lost opportunities to expand and grow the possibilities. Some higher level administrators abuse their powerful positions by promoting employees based on personal relationships, acting inappropriately, and wielding power to invoke fear in their subordinates, rather than encouraging their growth and development as professionals. The luck of the draw of the manager you work with can make or break your experience at KAUST.

I worked at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology

    Pros

Pleasant enough living conditions within a security sealed off area under saudi national guard control and outside of saudi local authority control. They will spend money to get people to attend the university and have an aim to become a top ten international university, nice weather and its by the sea. A place destined to get better, it seriously cant get any worse.

    Cons

The place was built in record time - 2 years - therefore imagine building a large university and small American coastal town with all the incumbent facilities in two years with unskilled workers and sub standard materials and that is the quality of the site, however it looks great from a distance. The other unfortunate issue is the management and many Saudi employed, they want to work like the west, but really only want to have the kudos of being Saudi citizens which they will often throw out as if one should be impressed and in order to work how and when they wish, totally unmanageable and the power that goes with being citizens, but the risk and decision making given to westerners. To be honest who in the top of their field would move there to work, restricted ability to travel freely in and out the country for visiting colleagues and an ability to live outside of the expat bubble that is KAUST, also a university which is not even in the top 50. I mean would you want to put KAUST or MIT on your CV. F or the environmentalist it is a disgrace, it ignores and allows the total disregard of the Kyoto agreements to which Saudi Arabia has signed up to, also I found it very upsetting how the 3rd world workers were treated. One unbelievable case which was never addressed was the workers did not have any toilet rolls or soap to wash their hands and these were the same people managing all the facilities, it does not take a graduate to see the implications.
