I worked at King's College London full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

High quality research environment, great colleagues. High calibre students. A serious focus on improving world rankings in both teaching and research.

    Cons

Teaching and teaching admin load too high. A two tier management system with division head and teaching head leads to competing interests and time demands.

    Advice to Management

    Reduce teaching admin burden.

    Pros

Good central London location, giving flexibility about where to live. Institutional reputation helps to open some doors. Many of the staff are pleasant.

    Cons

Some teams have high staff turnover, losing administrative know how - can lose a lot of time getting basic tasks done. Plan to move to shared offices for academic staff causing disquiet.

    Advice to Management

Need greater transparency in strategy making and target setting. it is not always clear how the strategic decisions made benefit the junior staff.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at King's College London full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Intelligent committed academics, good patient access, friendly atmosphere. Some campuses are well located, others less so. Good food options for staff.

    Cons

Appalling senior management, perennial threat of redundancy, hugely bloated and interfering management that seems to get bigger every day. Management does not trust staff and so imposes huge top-down bureaucracy. Procedures are inefficient and leadership weak. Promotion is non-existent unless you have a huge amount of grants.

    Advice to Management

Remove the onerous, never-ending procedures, policies and forms. Trust staff to do their job well and provide job security for once. People leave because they feel they won't be promoted, this needs addressing.
