    I worked at King's College London full-time

    Pros

This provided me great exposure into research enabling me to develop a wide range of skills and abilities. Additional management of European projects and being involved in world influencing pieces of research.

    Cons

Whilst in this role I had little to no support, which was extremely draining at times due to feeling quite out my depth considering this was my first research role. We lost a Post-Doc from the team and wasn't replaced. This I feel is common due to limited funding sources. You'll never have a permanent position due to no permanent funding source for your salary - but thats the nature of research.

    Advice to Management

Support the development and growth of your staff, especially the junior ones. The junior staff at King's are some of the most fruitful candidates to conduct research and should be nurtured in a way that makes them good researchers and in turn will continue research at King's.

I have been working at King's College London full-time

    Pros

Great research and intellectual stimulation; core funding of valuable research resources that allow researchers at an early career stage to undertake large-scale projects.

    Cons

Job expectations and work-life balance depend on line manager and head of department. Promotion is perceived as difficult as the decision is ultimately made at College level (by people who have never met you) and support of Line Manager/HoD does not appear to count for much - more of a tick-box exercise regarding income for the institution. Teaching can be depressing as focus is moving to income generation and "student experience", rather than academic excellence, but this is a broader problem across universities due to changes in the government funding model.

I have been working at King's College London full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Like most public sector jobs, particularly at professional services management level, the hours are reasonable for the pay and the pension scheme is pretty decent. Stress levels are low.

    Cons

There is a real culture of resistance to change and you're often having to do other people's jobs because they either take too long to do them or just don't do them. Also, I'm not sure I've ever worked somewhere where employees and their bosses will ignore emails and phone calls indefinitely because the question you're asking them is too difficult to answer. Nobody is held responsible when things go wrong. Poor working ethic seems to be rewarded with promotions or secondments.
