    "Over managed by incompetents"

    Doesn't Recommend
    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at King's College London full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A strong academic base with experts in many fields and world-leaders in some. Teaching and research are treated as equally important.

    Cons

Led by an obscenely overpaid clown, this once academically first-rate university is being suffocated by tier upon tier of administrators, the numbers of which will soon surpass those of the academic staff, and whose dictats are dumped on the revenue-earning members of the College in ever-increasing blizzards. A spectacularly absurd and wasteful managerial exercise was the recent attempt to 'rebrand' the College as 'King's London'. Worse, this was followed by brazen case of mismanagement - a directive to sack large numbers of teaching and research staff on the basis of spurious and inappropriate 'performance metrics', while hiring even more managers - including PR wonks to spin the exercise. The mis-administrators of KCL have either lost sight of what a university is for, or never knew in the first place.

    Advice to Management

Expecting turkeys to vote for Christmas is futile. But please consider, if for no reason other than financial, that you should prioritise the hiring and sustenance of the academic staff - they are the University and they are the revenue earners.

Highly focused laboratory interested in putting out high impact research rather than rubbish added to the scientific junk pile.

    Pros

Its a very affluent prestigious university and the academics leave quite an impression. It was important even as professional staff to get on the best side of all academics. I found all professional staff work in an open office which makes it easy to get to know everyone

    Cons

Can be isolating. Academics can be high maintenance.

    Advice to Management

    Allow a work-life balance.

    Pros

High quality research environment, great colleagues. High calibre students. A serious focus on improving world rankings in both teaching and research.

    Cons

Teaching and teaching admin load too high. A two tier management system with division head and teaching head leads to competing interests and time demands.

    Advice to Management

    Reduce teaching admin burden.
