White Male, Politically-driven Bureaucracy

Pros

Most of the staff (under the director level) are hard-working and mission-driven, authentic and driven by customer service. Benefits and pay are good.

Cons

If you can hang your head low and get by simply doing your job without seeking extended learning opportunities or advancement then this is a great place to work. The stereotype of white male bureaucracy is proven after a few months of employment when you see how decisions are made for political reasonings instead of being made in response to customer satisfaction or even costs when the funds come out of taxpayers pockets. These decisions are anything from naming new high-level employees who are friends-of-friends or former board members to decisions on employee classification or work/equipment contract awards. Sexual Harassment is prevalent and perpetrators are given a slap on the wrist. The HR department is NOT concerned with employee morale or health but are consistent in promoting games and/or contests to engage in order to get points that lower health insurance premiums. If an employee goes to HR to complain or simply seek advice it is the Directors practice to put forth an understanding, ethical face and subsequently fire the employee (unless the employee is backed by legal or union representation).

Burnout Warning

Pros

Decent pay, really good benefits and pension.

Cons

You will work horrible split shifts for a very long time. 5-7 years. This leads to massive burnout and horrible sleep patterns. Some of the shifts are ridiculous, too. You'll come in at like 3AM for one run that lasts one hour, and then come back in at like 3PM and work 7 hours. So, they're not really true "splits." Also, you never know what you're going to work until the day before, so good luck trying to have a family or social life. If you're married and have children, I do not recomend this job.
