Which of these 2 offers would you take: 1. Chief of staff to CEO at a luxury/fashion company, part of a larger luxury conglomerate (think LVMH, Richemont). TC ~ $300K. Cool perks and fun job. Good path to leadership within conglomerate. Can walk to office. 2. Director of Corp. strategy at a legacy CPG company (think Kraft, Danone, Campbell). TC ~$350K. Less “sexy” industry. Clear path for leadership. Commute time to office much longer (1.5 hrs of commute a day).

      Pros

Amazing Brands and very talented and driven people Great experience if you want to stay in Luxury business Staff sales

      Cons

Work/life balance is company aspiration but nobody lives by it. Hours are whatever the job demands. Quite often the teams are under-resourced given the workloads expected. Salary - generally lowest level of market rate and pretty terrible in junior positions as they rely on the pull of the brands to attract great people. The drawback is the great people usually leave after a couple of years once they got the name on their CV. Being French is a huge advantage!

      Cons

Politically intense environment and bureaucracy, hierarchical relationships, specific corporate culture (knowledge of French not required, but needed for successful growth)

      Pros

Fabulous brands; insatiable appetite for perfection and genuine passion for brands and products seen from every level of employee - from production facilities to craftsmen, right up to board members.

      Cons

Lack of team camaraderie, empathy. Vain, egocentric leadership in many brands. Extremely French corporate culture (particularly if you're based in Paris HQs/ maisons) where arrogance and loquacity are often valued over humility and ability. No work/ life balance and inflexible work arrangements mean many highly strung, overworked employees.

      A wonderful, though challenging, experience

      Pros

Fantastic brands with emotionally driven employees that execute strategies almost faultlessly. Having worked for a few other companies I can safely say that the reason for these brands being so successful is the commitment of the Marketing teams, efficiency of spend and excellence in hiring external consultancy to find a winning strategy Sample sales for sure Ambition. Once you accept the pay is rubbish and do your job the experience actually becomes very valuable. especially when you leave as you realise they think differently (and often better) than their competitors

      Cons

The pay is low. No point pretending otherwise. My salary after I left was double (and at a similar level to the position I had there). Work can be frenetic and emotionally draining but that is because you care. A long term career there is undeniably difficult if you are not French. Most of their brands are french though so isnt too hard to see why. In addition the HR teams are less interested in personal development than the development of the brand or business as a whole.
