I worked at Leicester City Council full-time

    Pros

    A very good salary.
    Some friendly staff.

    Cons

LCC has no direction as to what they are doing or where they are going.
Management is appalling, there is a lack of pastoral care, rude councillors and mayor, no team morale, lots of negativity, individuals that make for a much tougher/negative working environment for no reason, lots of backstabbing between different teams/people, some rude HR staff who have no idea what they are doing, lack of opportunities and no flexibility (even though this is 'supposedly' a 'benefit').

Moving to a much better organisation has made LCC look even worse. I wouldn't recommend working here at all.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to manage, and for those top dogs - learn how to employ respectable and supportive managers.

    Advice to Management

Deal with bullying culture, hire competent managers.

I have been working at Leicester City Council full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility is fantastic - if you want, you're given a laptop and can work from wherever you like; hot-desking is encouraged. The benefits are really good with flexi-time, not bad holiday allowance, etc. Some good corporate discounts too: Microsoft Office suite, mobile phones, etc. Broadly helpful if you're proactive in seeking opportunities to advance your professional development or interests. Young Employees Network.

    Cons

Financial pressures are omnipresent and therefore impede training opportunities, including conferences and similar experiences. Unless you're very proactive, and persistent, in seeking opportunities to advance your professional development, years will pass with few new experiences that enhance your CV. There is also a real lack of strategic direction which makes projects and change initiatives incoherent.

    Advice to Management

Invest in young talent - create career paths and don't just let contracts lapse; recognise what graduates/young workers can contribute and appreciate the opportunity to make them agents of change; formalise the young employee voice. Take a stronger leadership and management position and create a strategy that employees can get behind to improve outcomes for residents.
