I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working 9 day fortnight, pay reasonable, benefits good, support of career advancement.

    Cons

Tick box culture. Lessons never learnt. Continual circle of change without actual improvement. Continual focus groups on issues, but rarely issues addressed. Very poor management, pat on back for the higher level personnel and up and coming high end employees. Experience and voice matters little unless it fits. Many wrong inexperienced people in senior roles or supporting roles giving poor focus and leadership. Each project self driven no overall control. Front end of process, slow and poor with major delays, which are expected to be picked up at the other end of process to meet target and tick box regardless or time scale and notice. Hard work and frustrating to do the day job what you thought you were there for. Many higher level tasks passed down as far as possible to add to work load.

    Advice to Management

Take a long hard look get hands on experience at all levels, go and see the issues, get involved with the issues, have a week working with the issues, and LISTEN!

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The key feature is the 9 day fortnight, which is a really nice touch to work-life balance. There are a variety of projects the site is actively working on, so many opportunities to partake in them. The site was acquired by LM and you can always leverage on the US site to assist. Some of the SLT are US citizens which helps push forward change and are always helpful to assist. The site is preparing itself to meet the delivery targets of a large contract, so a hive of activity. Canteen is good and coffee is subsidised. Parking is plenty. Good walks around site should you need to stretch your pins after lunch. Changes are been made, such as IT equipment and personal benefits, which are welcome changes.

    Cons

The site has been acquired by LM, but nothing has been done to implement the mission, values, and culture from the US parent. SLT have done little and the MD is inept in leading these changes.

Projects and opportunities are not at all communicated so you are not made aware of what is going. There are newsletters in circulation, the majority outline the sycophant accomplishments rather than what really matters. I recall vividly a large article mentioning the fantastic work a PA did in printing reports and making arrangements for a customer review, which one would consider that is the responsibility of a PA, not least to mention the award this PA got.

The Ampthill site is in its infancy and there is no one in the SLT taking control to make the necessary changes to make sure the site is changed to meet the major contracts/programme deliveries. Individuals appointed at senior positions are totally inadequate and with little or no experience of how to achieve or get to the end goal. Most of the SLT are inexperience in their roles, for example, one of them has no experience of operations yet has been given the position of site operations, another leads the supply chain with no experience of supply chain. As a result the direction in which people are taken, and for those newly joining, this looks like an oil tanker heading for the rocks whilst the skipper is busy swinging golf balls off the stern.

The site has a leavers rate of avg.15/month. It is not that they do anything to keep you, they just can't as people leave because they see the rocks. HR claim they do their best retain you and look gormless when you tell them goodbye.

Shame this site has more negatives, can be a really good thing if radical changes are made.

    Pros

Historic and great company to work for. You have a lot of backing, and funds to play with. Great exposure to seniors if you want it.

I believe LM is really what you make of it, they really love Engineering SMEs but also allow you go to out the box in your career.

    Cons

Still very US based, and don't really know how to do business outside of US government to government sales. Still sees the UK business as immature, even though we show them up a lot of times!

    Advice to Management

You have a lot of experience in your UK work force on how to do international business, use it.

    Pros

Worked here for 8 years and really enjoyed it. As long as you're the kind of person who's happy to take up opportunities when they come along you can go a really long way.
The projects and programmes are all really interesting as well.
Money is reasonable to high, and benefits are above average.

    Cons

Promotion process is very long-winded and very competitive.

    Advice to Management

Keep growing the business in challenging times, and keep going as you are. Help people progress their careers and plans over time.

I worked at Lockheed Martin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The work is very interesting and no two days are ever the same. Management has great ideas around Ethics, personal responsibility and the like. Senior management is quite good, however middle management is terrible.

    Cons

    - There are not enough people to do the work.
    - Despite LM's great Ethics training, the "on the ground" culture is homophobic, sexist and just generally obnoxious. If you are not white, be prepared to be commented on behind your back.
    - Systems and processes are not up to the job and where they are, not followed.
    - Hiring practices are not transparent.
    - Training is non-existent. You are expected to know everything upon arrival.
    - The culture is extremely long-hours - if you want to spend weekends with your family, LM is not the place for you. People who take time off for childrens' assemblies and the like are frowned upon. Flexible working is not available.
    - Pay is not good for the volume and level of work expected of individuals.
    - Benefits package is poor, especially considering the hours required and the hours expected.
    - People are expected to switch jobs at short notice and with no change to T&Cs.

    Advice to Management

Sort out your middle management. If people aren't in line with Ethics, get rid of them because it creates a toxic environment. Actually resource the work properly.
