I worked at London Borough of Lewisham full-time

    Pros

Flexible working hours, staff are all very friendly, fairly generous holidays

    Cons

Feels very old fashioned at times in terms of adapting latest technology, though this is being addressed, albeit somewhat slowly in my opinion. Socials / company activities are non existent without full self-initiative

I worked at London Borough of Lewisham full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent opportunity for development in certain departments, especially for apprentices
Always doing a lot to support apprentices, graduates and work experience placements.
Pay, Annual Leave & Flexible working arrangements are some of the best that i've seen in London.
Front line and operational staff are extremely friendly, dedicated & hard working and easy to get along with.
Convenient location, next to railway stations.

    Cons

Professionalism can vary very wildly between departments, some are outstanding whereas others not so much (not a problem unique to here)
Bad experience with certain senior managers, for me, in one directorate ruined the overall experience of working here, and the lack of support/impartiality from certain personnel was also poor
Favouritism in selection for development opportunities
Disregard for Health & Safety in certain teams
No different to other Councils, as the actions of a few can ruin the good work of the many

    Advice to Management

Consult with front line staff, not just managers, on changes to the service, as more often than not those front line are a mass of untapped talent with a wealth of experience and knowledge that can easily feed new ideas and solutions into any proposed transformation.
Encourage internal promotion and development particularly within front line services.
Show visible appreciation to front line staff

I have been working at London Borough of Lewisham full-time

    Pros

Good employer with diverse work group

    Cons

    Directorates to be more integrated.

    Advice to Management

For directorate integrations, you need lunch time presentations from each directorate to explain their works.

I have been working at London Borough of Lewisham full-time

    Pros

Good work/life balance. Can happily do your set hours (flexi-time) and go home guilt-free. They also do use a TOIL system when you have racked up extra hours. Also good with letting you work from home. Good with exams too and in many cases will pay for them.

    Cons

Hopefully just my experience but the onboarding process was shambolic. Started 2 months later than I was initially told I could expect to start, which in turn was 4 months after receiving the job offer!

I was passed from pillar to post by managers & HR and had to call on an eventual daily basis to chase up my reference checks etc with the absolute minimum of updates from them.

Building is creaking & unsightly but in fairness they are undergoing a programme of transformation work. Technology is in many cases old and not conducive to modern practices and ways of working (no laptops, old version of Windows, often very slow).

    Advice to Management

Keep investing in the building & technology

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at London Borough of Lewisham full-time

    Pros

Had many happy years at Lewisham. However, subsequent senior Management changes - nepotism ! destroyed an efficient and compliant department. Subsequent interviews for positions were obviously conducted fairly as the council prescribes - to result in the employment of friends/neighbours and sons! Many financial decisions are not made due to fair business practice or practicality- resulting in a corrupt and potentially fraudulent practices

    Cons

Not a fair working place. Favouritism rules.

    Advice to Management

Employ those who actually have transferable and relevant experience in the field and justified by relevant qualifications - The Culture and values preached are truly a pretence. I'm not sure whether the executive level are aware of the conduct of their senior managers - but would not be surprised as some originated as CEO 's personal assistants. It will not be long before whistleblowing comes into place - I feel sorry for those who have had their careers shattered
