Good Job but can become a bit tedious

Oct 12, 2021 - Control Room Officer in London, England

    Pros

Actively helping the general public and contributing to a safer London is a big plus that this role does give you. The people I work with have become like family, some tiffs here and there but for the most part genuinely good people. Annual leave is really good, pay is good, lots of breaks, overtime helps with getting extra money. Room for promotion within control. Some social groups available for people to join connected to the LFB outside of work. Great support group in the LFB welfare both physical, mental and financial.

    Cons

The 12 hours shifts either side of the middle 8 hours shifts can be soul draining. If all the shifts were 8 hours I don't think I'd leave anytime soon. Night shifts have definitely shortened the longevity appeal for this job. You can't leave the premises for your breaks, no clear pathway into getting into roles within the LFB outside of the control room (which makes it seem like a dead end). The LFB like to recruit externally for certain roles which to me is a bit strange considering the hidden gems they already have working within the organisation. Unable to work remotely ever! if you a working within the control room, unless you are a top end senior manager. Can sometimes seem like a call centre in terms of layout and processes. It's a niche role so even though you can pick up some transferable skills its hard to transition into another industry if you are not actively studying or researching for yourself outside of the work place. Not enough diversity within control as in ethnic minorities. Possibly within the LFB as a whole but can only speak from my work experiences. Can be traumatic if you experience or are involved in a bad call.

    Lack of empathy

    Pros

Salary is good for what qualifications you need.

    Cons

Lack of care, empathy, sense of a workforce. Mental health is a rude phrase in the LFB, no care or consideration is given. As long as the individual gets promoted, who cares?
