      Pros

I loved working at MAC. The training was great and I learned so much about being an artist there. Also there is no career progression once you’ve made it to management and moving to Head Office is basically not going to happen.

      Cons

I found that in the UK there was not a work life balance as an assistant manager. We very rarely had two days off in a row making it very hard to fully switch off.

      Pros

Makeup discount - on all Estée Lauder products MAC Basic training - 5 days away from store Working with makeup - developing artistry skills with some amazing artists

      Cons

Bullying is rife, especially from senior management Stereotypical makeup counter experience - gossip etc. No work life balance - often working until 10.30pm and then back in at 7am the next day Weekend late shifts and bank holidays not fairly shared between management team Feeling sick whenever higher manager came in! Mental health was at an all time low, not a nice place to work at all :(

Not what it used to be

      Pros

A good place to develop makeup skills if you are new to makeup artistry.

      Cons

No recognition, progression, work/life balance. Extremely toxic work culture. Very cliquey. Favouritism. Bullying. Inexperienced management. Poor wages for the work you are expected to do. Hardly any bonuses as counters are not busy. You’re promised the world and expected to go above and beyond however the reality is there is just no progression in the company any more. MAC used to be all about artistry but that is becoming less and less important. I joined the company with high hopes, I was new to the brand and excited to prove myself. Unfortunately the brand has so many terrible customer and employee reviews online for a reason. Products are outdated and overpriced. The counter is too intimidating for customers, everything needs to be explained to them which is extremely difficult when you are always understaffed. Today’s beauty culture is very DIY and trendy which MAC is not. Some products are excellent but the quality of eyeshadows and many new releases are a joke. The brand is still selling particular items with terrible designs that that become faulty after a few uses. Embarrassing when cheaper brands can do it better. The bonus incentives are a way of not paying artists for doing makeovers, as targets are based on the performance of the counter as a whole.

Great Past... but Problem-riddled Brand with Serious Leadership and HR Issues

      Pros

High visibility brand, Good benefits, Central offices, Product quality

      Cons

Deceptive and divisive HR practices guided by Estee Lauder Corp, Brand actions are reactive not pro-active, Riddled with stock management issues, Constant strategy changes without follow-through, Unclear leadership, Lack of clear Brand direction with measurable goals to understand success, Un-supportive of independent voices, Disconnection to reality of modern consumer wants/voice, Poorly regards retail employees and will manage out quickly if not selling enough, No longer artistry focused as brand was known for - solely sales focused, Follows trends and no longer makes them, Revolving door of leavers, Shop floors not manned enough for demands of job roles to be executed to targeted sales levels, Dated training concepts and initiatives to inspire and educate teams to compete with market demands, lack of philanthropy in modern way, very low level work/life balance - expected to be on call 24/7 and working during weekend in order to complete reporting

Fun, creative, and obviously you get to play with makeup all day.

      Cons

Not great work-life balance. Depends on who you work with, can make or break your time at the company. Requires a lot of commitment to the brand.
