A shop that runs in an alternate reality

Pros

Considering the size of the place And the level of talent, the pay is extremely good and the benefits are competitive, though they don’t match 401k.

Cons

The first con is that HR has been encouraging the “leaders” of the company to write only positive 4-5 star rated reviews. Stop doing that and be honest with yourselves. About 15% of the less than 200 person company is considered to be in “leadership” roles. It is ridiculously top heavy for a startup. They have all the trappings and bureaucracy of a large corporation - long, frequent and rambling meetings and several committees, but it still lacks the governance or professionalism of a regular corporation. Two to four hour meetings over simple business decisions are quite common but the hierarchy of the place is such that the final decision is made by one or two people in the Executive team. The place prides itself to be an “equality” fostering oasis in a big bad world. Promotions and hiring are based on fulfilling vanity metrics - aka diversity. The company assigns a referral bonus for new hires based on gender and skin color. On the face of it, seems like a good strategy, but in reality it is patronizing.

Thank you for the honest feedback, it's appreciated. We don't deny that there are always opportunities to improve, which is why we always welcome feedback from everyone on the team. We apologize if there was a misunderstanding of HR asking people to only leave positive reviews, I assure you that was not the intent. Our culture is such that we want to know where to improve and need the honest feedback. Finally, if you have concerns as a current employee either on your experience or on your career development, we strongly encourage you to talk to your manager or someone in HR for guidance and assistance. Thank you for being a part of the team at Mosaic.

Pros

Mosaic sells itself as being mission driven and has therefore attracted some amazing individuals. Salaries are fairly high and the office is beautiful.

Cons

The leadership team and decision makers at Mosaic are almost exclusively white males - and it has a negative impact on company culture. Loyalty and complacency are valued above all else: one succeeds at Mosaic by staying silent when they see problems - even if they do the bare minimum in their jobs, and one is punished for raising a contrary opinion or for trying to strive for innovation by encouraging change. This is especially the case for women - where the expectation of you is to quietly do your job and smile at your white male superiors. The People Ops team has no interest in protecting or supporting employees. Going to them with a problem puts a target on your back and they will do their best to silence you until you leave the company. They do not document or investigate issues, even when an employee reports that they feel unsafe or discriminated against for being a woman. Mosaic has recently abandoned its dedication to Solar and by focusing mostly on Home Improvement financing they have lost what used to make them unique in the fin-tech space - their mission.

I’m sorry to hear that your time at Mosaic was a negative experience for you. Currently one third of our leadership team is women but we agree, that isn’t enough and we are continuing to look to improve our diversity at all levels of the organization. We take all employee complaints seriously and want all employees to feel safe and respected at work. Employee relations issues are often complex and we realize it can be frustrating when a situation doesn’t resolve in the a way an employee had hoped. We are not abandoning solar, it will continue to be an important part of the business. Our vision is 100% clean energy for all and financing energy efficient home improvement projects (such as roofing, windows and HVAC systems) will help to reduce energy usage which gets us one step closer to our vision.

Pros

Novel industry, new things to learn, people are friendly to work with for the most part

Cons

There is high variability in overall happiness in the organization depending on which department you are in which highlights a fragmented corporate culture and disparities among the leadership in the company. Despite the emphasis on solar, Mosaic is ultimately a financial and lending company. However everything finance (from operations to process to execution) is highly lacking. Work is done hurriedly and last minute with little preparation and support for employees. Much of the work is still manual and tedious. You will be worked to the bone. Mosaic does an excellent job touting its corporate values but where is that same spirit of compassion and gratitude when it comes to rewarding, investing, and appreciating your employees? If you wish to grow your career I would insist you look elsewhere. The company that will dote over you when it needs you and then later change its mind and discard you. Dig a little deeper, and the lack of investment in or concern for employees is apparent (especially so in finance/accounting) and the modus operandi is "end justifies the means". Change is constant and highly disruptive. Psychological safety is low. It's hard to recommend a workplace that is fickle and is unable to keep its employees' trust.

We agree that there are opportunities to improve our operations and efficiency so that the work is not as manual. We are in the process of implementing Salesforce and also have several other workstreams in place to improve processes and operations. We encourage all employees to set personal and professional development goals and then to use one hour a week of “Dev Hour” to focus on their growth and development. We provide an allowance for employees to purchase books, resources and attend classes that support their growth. We were also happy to role out LinkedIn Learning earlier this year (formerly Lynda.com) so that employees have access to thousands of online training classes.
