Pros

Probably some of the most hard working, passionate people I have ever met. The work and the mission is exciting.

Cons

Unfortunately the many cons of working at MSI outweighs the pros. Colleagues from BAME backgrounds do not end up staying long due to the toxic environment created by the executive team and the CEO. There is salary inequalities throughout the organization. Personal ‘brand’ and popularity triumphs over qualifications and good quality work, and progression opportunities are not offered equally and in a transparent manner. Those that are the loudest, with flashier work are recognized and progress. The executive team holds unconditional power although not all have any experience in health or international development. They organizational business decisions with limited consultations (or they consult as a formality and do what they want anyways). Incredibly long work hours, with no importance given to appropriate compensation. CEO recently mentioned that work-life balance is a “side-show” to getting the work done.

Pros

Seriously dedicated people. I have never worked with a more passionate group of people. However, the White Savior complex that exists at MSI detracts from this passion.

Cons

For an organization working to improve the lives of people in poor-resource settings, you would think more would be done to make the staff body in HQ look a bit more like the people they serve and to enshrine the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in the staff and operations. This is far from the case. In fact, racism and racist attitudes exist strongly. I have seen non-White employees mistreated and scrutinized unfairly. There is also a disgusting culture of "we are here to help them". This White savior complex has no place in development. Another thing I took a big issue with is the London HQ office building. It is woefully outdated and too small- insufficient and inadequate work spaces and meeting rooms; toilets that lack proper heating, smelly basement meeting rooms, etc.
