I have been working at Marks & Spencer part-time

    Pros

    - Started on a 5 week temporary contract, was extended a month then made permanent.
    - Amazing pay for a 17 year old (£8.50/hr)
    - Loads of overtime
    - Mostly friendly customers
    - Often trained on new things
    - 20% discount
    - Great rewards for good service and comments (£60 in gift cards)

    Cons

    - Overtime availability can fluctuate
    - Long shifts with short breaks
    - Lack of work/life balance
    - Some managers are often continuously over your shoulder when its not necessary
    - Roles of managers unclear, some managers are clueless on some things and often shaft you off to other ones.

    Advice to Management

Leave staff to get on with their job - you do not need to be parading around continuously around us.

I have been working at Marks & Spencer part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities for further training, at least at the smaller store I work at.
Overtime available, flexible contracts depending on relationship with your line manager.
I didn't anticipate the level of personal recognition and reward from management, especially during first year of employment (employee of the month, spotlight awards).

    Cons

Cold working environment, somewhat antisocial working pattern (I work 2-9pm plus every other weekend).

Progression is possible if you show ability, but the incentive to do so is lacking. Increased responsibility is not reflected in lower pay bands (i.e. difference between customer assistant, section coordinator and section manager).

But this of course depends on whether you want to progress in this sector and are prepared for not great pay plus being moved around stores a lot.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider pay differentials for customer assistant and section coordinator, with better transition for coordinators into managers.

    Pros

Loved the experience . Great recruitment , induction, staff and customers. Worked in foods so was always busy with things to do. Supportive management and a great team spirit.

Good discounts and staff perks even if you are a temp.

    Cons

Non really if you are willing to be flexible and adaptable. Quite often you will be asked to help out doing something other than you are down to do.

    Advice to Management

As a temp at a busy time of year you can feel very thrown in at the deep end as mangers don't have a lot of time to spend with you. Would be good to buddy temps up with a permanent member of staff working the same shift pattern.

I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lovely staff that are all welcoming and very helpful. Management take an interest in you and are understanding about all individual circumstances. I felt a part of the M&S family within a week of being at the company.
The focus truly is on helping the customer and putting them first, such that you are not expected to rush your dealings with them in order to make a difference to their day. Right up my street even if there were a few customers that clearly could have stayed all day talking away! :o)

    Cons

As a seasonal temp, clearly take time off over Christmas is not preferred therefore can leave you feeling tired and possibly missing out, but it was to be expected.

There was some miscommunication over Boxing Day expectations at the interview, This meant we as a family had to change our plans and to be honest, I don't think it was necessary
My working hours were also not correctly logged on the system so had to chase some pay, however this was all dealt with professionally, friendly and fairly quickly.

I also wasn't supplied with a uniform when most of my seasonal colleagues were and thus my own clothes were getting very worn even after seven weeks.

    Advice to Management

Esnure the starting preparation is complete for all starters such that all hours are logged as advertised, everyone has working staff cards and till operating numbers, all uniforms are dispatched after request (or a reason why they are not) and that discount cards are handed out on the first day of training. I decided to go to the office to collect my card as I hadn't heard anything after my first week of work (two weeks after starting). Plus the discount on the cards should be consistent as some colleagues had £75 while mine was £50 and was used before I finished.

    Pros

    Good pay
Section managers always taking care of staff
Helped set hours to work around university
    Always overtime

    Cons

Some of the staff who have been there many many years look down on you
Store manager literally had no clue of any names of staff - didn't care

    Advice to Management

Don't just sit in your office all day, get to know some of the employees under you

I have been working at Marks & Spencer part-time

    Pros

-Great pay compared to most places for young people (under 18)
-Staff are very friendly to eachother and will always help if you have a problem
-Make loads of new friends from working there (I am 16 but have loads of friends from complete different age ranges just from working around them)
-Quick paced environment means working 8 hours goes like nothing
-Managers (especially in Sutton branch) always have time to listen and help you if you are looking for extra hours, changes to your weekly hours or just a job to do when you have finished your last job.
-Staff discount for you + 1 person that lives with you is great for families
-Feels rewarding being able to help and brighten up many people's day.

    Cons

-Some customers treat you like you should be their slave
-Can get quite tiring after 3 days of 8 hour shifts in a row!

    Advice to Management

Keep up the friendliness with staff and keep doing a good job!

    -20% discount
-one of the best paying retailers about
    -Co workers generally quite nice
    -subsidised staff cafe

    Cons

-after 9am it gets very boring
-lots of emphasise on 'productivity" even though after 9am there is nothing to do but walk around
-too much expectation on new staff in terms of productivity

    Advice to Management

go easy on new workers and understand that we need to get used to the store about before introducing productivity
