I have been working at Marks & Spencer full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - The job is very straightforward, just need to have the good work ethic.
    - Flexible work patterns. Especially if you have been working in the company for a longer period.
    - 20% staff discount.
    - Salary is £9.95 an hr, which is OK for a retail job but do feel at least £11 an hr is more than fair for the amount of work you have to do.

    Cons

    - This is clearly going to depend on the individual store, but here are some of the cons:
    - Lack of staff at times can put a lot of pressure on you. But I believe that goes with most unskilled labour jobs.

    Advice to Management

    - DO LISTEN to your staff, this goes to area managers, consultants, head office staff, CEO. Believe me, the problems on the shop floor are a lot more transparent to the staff who work on shop floor level. We are working at a very top-down management system, and it should not be like that if we really want to succeed. Make everyone feel like part of a team. Make everyone's opinion feel respected and consult. Just like you are an expert at your job, the staff are an expert in theirs, no one knows their job better than the one doing it. So instead of sending out messages to do this to improve sales, open up and approach the staff and ask how can we do this? how can we improve sales? how can we reduce waste? how can we improve our productivity?
    - Customers are crucial for any business but remember your people working for you are your biggest assets. Treat them well, make them feel respected, show them their opinions count, make them feel valued and not just another chess piece, look after your people and they will look after your business. If we all work together as a team, the only way is up. Sadly that does not seem to be the case.

I have been working at Marks & Spencer part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is not bad for a retail job, the company is willing to train you in first aid, cash handling, fire safety which do add to your cv. Benefits aren't bad for the job.

    Cons

The managers, however, do not know what they're doing they expect you to work any shift they give you without asking. If you're a student or a single mother they will not change your hours or shifts and they expect you to base your life around work.
