    I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time

    Pros

Nice people some good benefits. Health care and pension scheme was good. Shop layout was good. Ample uniform supplied.

    Cons

No organisation , was a new store, but managers inexperienced and not very approachable. Lack of training, I applied for sales assistant and ended up working in the bakery? Rota was hard to access due to team failure. I expected a lot more from this reputable company.

    Advice to Management

Attain more people and organisation skills. Be more approachable because problems do arise. Listen to staff feedback.

I have been working at Marks & Spencer full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Other customer assistants are wonderful

    Cons

Lack of respect/put down by Managers

Managers promote friends rather than qualified/trained members

Untrained Managers, some don't even know Customer Assistant jobs let alone any managerial techniques

Blame forced on departments by managers not taking responsibility

Never enough Staff, despite informing managers

    Poor progression

Disregard for health and safety both physical and mental

Pay isn't worth what you put up with

Customers are rude, think highly of themselves

Hours are switched with little notice

No training, I'm still yet to be trained in many basic things and have been working there for multiple years.

You will be blamed for things that are not your fault. You will be told you're bad at your job.

Bullying, managers bully each other ganging up on one as well as staff.

Hours are terrible and managers do little to accommodate this even if it is a struggle for you to make it to work.

    Advice to Management

Get managers trained properly or replace with people who know what they're doing, they are a strain on the mental and physical health of the staff.

    I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time

    Pros

Good discount especially when used with sparks offers.

    Cons

You never know what you are going to be doing they chop and change you frequently I was meant to be in clothing and home and was put in other departments where you feel out of place and unwelcome.
They expect you to do the work of about 3 people.
People don’t get recognition for hard work and the managers only give spotlights to friends.
Managers seem to think they are better than anyone and treat customer assistants like dirt.
God forbid you have to work pre sale day they have you overworked and it’s not worth the pay.
Your expected to treat customers like royalty in a firm believer in excellent customer service but find it very backward having to call every man sir.
Your constantly told to do one thing by one manager then another thing by another manager they have you run ragged.
Once you have your two days training your just left to your own devices and expected to know things they haven’t even taught you.

    Advice to Management

When you want a job done it should be done properly when I worked on restocking especially in ladies wear the standards were always shocking but you expect this to be done in the same amount of time it takes just to re stock. You should make sure every member of staff knows how to do standards as most nights when I was working I watched a few other staff who just threw things anywhere and you could clearly see the standards needed done.
The amount of stock you expect to be put on a shop floor is just not achievable with the lack of space that the shop has to hold it kids wear is one of the worst places for a worker to have to try and find space for new stock and also for a customer to shop.
Show a little care and compassion to all your staff and maybe you won’t loose as many workers over the festive period.

I worked at Marks & Spencer full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Made lots of friends for life and still meet up with them now . Met some lovely customers

    Cons

The store where I worked had way to many mangers some really nice but one or 2 really awful .
In fact one of them made my life hell every day she was my manger. Even made one girl leave
My husband worked at the same store u till a few months ago .
A member of staff who has not long been in the company made a pack of lies up against him and they had all the evidence that put my hubby in the clear but yet they still be lived this member of staff .
The situation caused some much distress for him he got server depression.
The 2 mongers handled the situation so badly that they need replacing training

    Advice to Management

To look after your long service staff members.
Do your home work when a situation comes to light that your not sure about .
Look at all the evidence that's in front of you .
Don't expect your staff to do what you wouldn't do .
