I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice managers who take care of their staff. Decent wage of £8.50 an hour. The hours are flexible and it is an excellent place to work if you are a student.

    Cons

Customers are not always nice. This can depend on the situation however the majority of the time customers are nice as the demographic is usually older people

  2. "Kept on a temporary contract for 18 months !!! - Shameful practice!!!"

    Pros

Discount for staff 20% so very good if you actually need to buy something and buy in the sale. Great direct line manager who respected and treated her staff well, and therefore got the best out of them. Higher management tend to be more aloof.

    Cons

Getting the temporary staff to go off into different departments all of the time - never the permanent staff. Being kept on a temporary contract for 18 months and constantly having to reapply for your job - sometimes in as little as 6 weeks -resulting in an ever decreasing amount of temporary staff. Then finally all of us lost our jobs. I think this was a shameful practice by such a well regarded household name.

    Advice to Management

Be fair and balanced with temporary staff and not treat them differently to permanent staff. STOP temporary contracts that run on and on and on. After 3 months if the employee is good make their job permanent. Steve Rowe - sort out women's fashion. Clothing is dire. Needs better quality fabrics and more 'on- trend' fashion - the phase you manager love. If Next can do it so can M and S.

    I worked at Marks & Spencer full-time

    Pros

Good pay for retail. Some great colleagues. Good appliances and free fruit, bread etc in break room.

    Cons

Customers can be incredibly rude. Management continuously offer temporary conracts every few months instead of permanent ones. Temporary staff are treated very different to permanent workers. Everything is very strict and regimented and this can get annoying - e.g. Can't go to toilet or drink water unless you're on your break. Long shifts, days can be quite intense and stressful, on the Christmas department I sometimes wouldn't have time to take my whole break because there was so much to do that day. Hardly any training, the person doing the induction day skipped a lot of it because they were bored, you're thrown in at the deep end and expected to learn everything yourself. The use of iPads to do customer orders is a pain because the website was always slow and glitchy and customers would get annoyed

    Advice to Management

Be less strict, the store won't fall apart if someone quickly goes to the toilet during their shift or if staff are chatting at the till when there's no customers

    I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time

    Pros

I moved around during my time with the company, but each store I went to had members of staff that were more than helpful and you always felt like you could go to them

    Cons

a downside is that although the staff were friendly, there were always a few who were pretty much unapproachable, and chances are, you'd always get paired with them when doing certain tasks.

    I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time

    Pros

Good staff discounts on products which are exceptionally good, stable job if you are useful to them. Can be a good place to work if and only if you are liked.

    Cons

Career progression extremely difficult if you start as a sales assistant. Staff are very cliquey in some stores, and bullying often takes places. Can be an extremely toxic place to be if you are not part of "the club".

    Advice to Management

Good business model, keep selling value for money.
Please do something about the abusive conduct of some people there, i.e. deal with it swiftly. And only promote capable, competent and professional supervisors and low/middle managers, as opposed to children who treat the place like their own personal playground, making life hell for those they don't like, and enabling the abusive tendencies of those they have made friends with.

    I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time

    Pros

Good team, good rate of pay, especially it increases with years of experience at M&S and you get also location premium and bonus once a year depending on the contracted hours.
Good opportunities for extra hours, especially at the cafe.

    Cons

Gets extremely busy at times, staff are required to do the job for people that are not there or called in sick, as in most cases we did not get enough staff.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the staff with a long-term perspective to retain them, rather than accepting the large turnover in the cafe department and not taking any measures against this.
