I worked at Marks & Spencer full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The work is easy and if you’re ucky and in the right place at the right time you will find yourself on part of a team that makes it enjoyable.

    Cons

Most of the management seem unfit to be responsible for people working under them. Even though integrity is one of their four pillars it’s rare to find it in store (I worked through 4 stores over 7 years.) costs have overtaken every value and you can feel that in staffing and the shop floor. Shifts consistently changed without being asked so many arguments to be had. Training of floor level staff non existent as many managers feel uninterested in ensuring staff are competent and comfortable. It felt like there was very little accountability a lot of the time for even minor things and the blame game was played a lot.

    Advice to Management

The training in people management is non existent, better structure of management in store as some store managers are constantly doing nothing or next to nothing and they don’t fulfill their duties on the people side of things regularly. Have a better screening process before promoting people.

need to be on the front foot in technology to ensure it remains market leading.

    Advice to Management

Continue to live and breath our values and 'do the right thing' to ensure the company's success.

I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Worked through summer and over Christmas, left by choice, though, to focus on college.

Pretty chill environment, for the most part. Customers tended to be alright, and management wasn't terrible. Rarely was I forced into doing things I didn't necessarily want to.

Being young and on a wage of £8/hour is nice, too.

    Cons

Like all retail jobs, it was completely soul destroying. You're going to have to add some level of excitement to the job to remind yourself that you're alive.

    Advice to Management

Speak to the part-time employees more. Too many times did I come to work and not have a clue what I was supposed to be doing for the day.
