I have been working at Marks & Spencer part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Discount card. Nice colleagues. Regular job and hours. Regular shift pattern.

    Cons

Taking life entitled discount card away for 10years + over 55 . Enforcing ‘flexible’ hours. Poor uncaring managers. Not allowed to talk to colleagues. Under staffed. Feeling that when the company is not performing it is the staff to blame

    Advice to Management

Reward loyal long term staff with discount card. Many colleagues are heading for alternative employment at the loss of this key benefit. This has an effect on future sales and loyal customer base. People have lives and need to know when they are working. Flexible hours are no good for working mums. John Lewis treat staff as partners, this flexible working arrangement is like going back in time to Victorian values. Vert poor. Don’t blame the staff for M&S not performing. Get your product range sorted. Staff can’t smile when they are totally under manned, under pressure against a back drop of mangers who don’t care and chastise adults for conversing with colleagues. Look after your staff, they look after the customers. Benefits are diminishing.

    Pros

pay was good and the staff discount

    Cons

no communication i was never properly introduced to the management i was just expected to know.
very little training again i was just meant to know what i was doing
was often put in for shifts on the day and not given any notice or even asked if i was available

    Advice to Management

    communicate with staff better
let them know when they are working if added in for extra shifts
management need to be seen more

I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Gained retail experience working for a large company that is well respected. It was fun working for a shop that had a real buzz around the Christmas period.

    Cons

Felt like I was given too much to do at times, felt overworked. Management could also appreciate staff more, a goodbye and thank you at the end of employment would have been appreciated for all the hard work put in over Christmas.

    Advice to Management

    Respect staff at all times.

    Pros

20% discount card, overtime if you want to

    Cons

Management is horrible, pretty much pressures you into taking extra shifts, was meant to recieve a discount card for my mother, didn't receive it after 6 months.

    Advice to Management

    Sort yourself out

I worked at Marks & Spencer part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good atmosphere, good pay, staff discount, excellent customer service. A staff lounge with free bread, butter, tea and coffee machines, microwaves, kettles and a toasters. Approachable management. I loved working there and would definitely return.

    Cons

Not being told that I was not being kept on for an extra month, it was left very ambiguous ie I was told that I was re-employable, but didn’t say that I wasn’t staying on.

    Advice to Management

Tell all temporary staff simultaneously if they are being kept on, i.e. email or notice board. Not spread over 2 weeks, by phone, randomly bumping into someone, or what happened to me (and others) not being told and seeing my name wasn’t on the rota.

I have been working at Marks & Spencer full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Discount pays not to bad

    Cons

Management team are crap, staff always down as it’s like being at school

    Advice to Management

Shift around in management in store is needed as some treat you as your in school having to ask to get a drink or water or needing to use the look. Certain areas (ww) need serious work around management

I worked at Marks & Spencer as a contractor

    Pros

Friendly team throughout the store and, mostly, nice customers. Loved the interaction and helping people. Supportive departmental manager.

    Cons

Constant selling of M&S banking services.
    Short breaks
Not knowing if contract would be extended until last couple of days beforehand.

    Advice to Management

Keep your management team more equipped with knowledge of staffing levels required. Lo
