Pros
Great rotational retail graduate scheme (covering Finance, Operations, General Merchandising, Food, Visual Merchandising) . Support from experienced professionals on each placement and empowerment to take ownership throughout. Be prepared to fit the requirements of the business at any given time and use this to your advantage. E.g holiday cover, line management cover. It's great experience. Good starting salary which is reviewed appropriately. Staff and corporate discount. Good "perks" however not many employees take advantage.
Cons
The 'retail lifestyle'. It's no fault of M&S however be prepared for working Saturdays and long hours dependent on store. Appraisal / bonus system. Not to be confused! The bonus itself I believe to be generous however the scale on which it is worked out down to your personal performance rating is questionable. Progression through bands is hard due to the size of the pool you start in as a store/commercial manager.

Long hours across shop due to having food hall even though rest of shop doesn’t get busy earlier & later New ways of doing things (digitally) pushing away their main customers Management constantly moving around, very confusing to know who to go to Understaffed

Pros
Excellent training and introduction to the overall business with many opportunities for progression if you are willing to work hard. A very friendly environment where you will make friends for life with colleagues.
Cons
As it is retail you may be asked to work during anti-social hours on evenings and at weekends but sad they are getting rid if all the benefits for doing so.
- 2.06 Mar 2018Bank AssistantCurrent Employee, less than 1 yearLondon, England
Pros
20% M&S discount Good salary Potential career with HSBC Friendly team
Cons
- Daily organised chaos, there is not enough time, enough training, enough resources, enough room for our customer base (about 200 customers a day and we have 4 offices, m&s bank functions largely through computer use). - System issues, this is bad, some people have been unable to do their job properly for months with no explanation as to why they can't access the system. - Shift and Rota last minute changes and unsociable hours (every other weekend which will either be 9-5 or 11-9) these can be changed very last minute without anyone informing you, there's a password set on rotas so you can't access them and only 1 week shown to you at a time. - targets. 2 credit cards a day (wasn't discussed in my interview) despite bank servicing and paperwork being constant you're then expected to get 2 credit cards a day standing at till points. - Head office are sometimes really pleasant or are quite rude, if you can't solve an issue in branch you'd phone head office as they are able to access/process more information. I was new and had a customer in front of me and was questioned by head office at this time as to why I had been left in branch alone and why I had called etc. I felt really awkward as this in front of customers is unprofessional. - staffing, not enough offices or staff for the work load. - Training is close to non-existent. I have raised this many a time to my team and to management, it's not that they don't want to help, it's that there's no time. The work load is far too high. When I was trained (a weeks course of training) our trainer just non stop moaned about how the course was boring accompanied with how there was such a lack of resources. - you can help every customer but if you don't input it on the systems you don't get recognition. I love my customers and will do everything I can to make sure they have a good experience but the amount of barriers stopping not only customer service levels but also recognition is saddening. - not only are you trying to perfect your bank role and have your own bank. management, but you also have m&s retail management breathing down your neck and they will inform your manager if you're just 'sat in a room doing nothing'.... (my colleague was trying to teach me how to use a system... ) - micro managed

Pros
Really enjoyed working here whilst studying for my A Levels. Flexible working hours and was able to add additional hours over busier periods (e.g. Christmas). Enjoyed employee benefit of 20% off everything.
Cons
Bigger company so less connection with other members of staff- particular more senior individuals.
