Great place to intern and learn a lot

1 Oct 2020 - Summer Intern in Nashville, TN

    Pros

Small teams mean that you really get to make the most of the internship and get to know a large number of people, which is supported by scheduled presentations/discussions from different parts of the business as well as meetings with senior people. The internship projects were real work too rather than projects just for the sake of projects and the practical use/results of the work were emphasised. Tech is also a huge focus, so I massively developed my tech skills even in such a short period (8 weeks). Huge contributions to charity - I was sponsored to run a charity 10K.

    Cons

Relatively flat structure means there's no predictable/standard career trajectory for those who like to have this sort of aim

    Great Place to work!

30 Sep 2020 - Software Developer in London, England, England

    Pros

One of the best places to work in technology, seems well valued within the business. About a, quarter of the company are in the tech team I believe, and senior staff also push the importance of it. This is also shown by the level of automation thrroughout all areas of the business. They also invest in using the latest technology and staying ahead of the curve, which can be rare in other finance firms.

    Cons

The hours are usually 8-6, which is a bit longer, but is nothing compared to other finance firms.

    Wonderful people & challenging work

1 Oct 2020 - Summer Technology Intern in London, England, England

    Pros

The lean head count there means that everyone's work counts so your contributions definitely feel valued even as an intern. There is a big emphasis on personal development there and over the few months I had the opportunity to learn a lot about the business as a whole Challenging work with a learning curve for sure, but the people there are really friendly and helped guide me along the process. Great office as well with many perks.

    Cons

Perhaps a bit intense at times in terms of workload.

Just watch out for senior management...

    Pros

The office is beautiful and the benefits are some of the best i've ever had. If you work hard you are rewarded well & the IT systems/support is second to none

    Cons

Senior management... they're highly strung, condescending, rude and they will treat you like you're something they stepped in.

    MWAM - great company

13 Oct 2016 - Developer in London, England, England

    Pros

MW is a technology driven company, from the roots of quantitative trading has grown an organisation that is inherently data driven and technological at heart. Enormous leeway is given to technologists to choose the appropriate tools and systems to solve business problems rather than hidebound adherence to specific technologies Bureaucracy is kept to a minimum The people at MW, across business and technology are some of the smartest in the business Relatively small teams for a firm with the assets of MWAM foster communication within the teams High degree of automation across multiple areas of the business These last 3 things make for an environment where learning to be excellent rather than good is available Chances to work in technology areas other than your core speciality are always open The latest office move is spectacular - 5 floors on Sloane square, a gym and a restaurant taking an entire floor, and equipped to a high degree not seen normally Culture driven from the energetic Ian Wace is definitely not stuffy!

    Cons

Very rigid on starting times, 8 am on the dot daily High pressure environment, only suited to someone with a high tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to deal with conflicting requirements Low on process - the other edge of the lack of bureaucracy.

Good place starting out as a quant

20 Mar 2018 - Quant in London, England, England

    Pros

Marshall Wace is a great place to learn fresh out of university, also generally early on in one's career. The setup is very collaborative and one can learn a lot quickly.

    Cons

The firm relies rather heavily on the quant strategies for its bottom line, but there is generally little appreciation of quants by the senior management. I got the impression quant was seen as a sort of backwater. It compliments the main business but is not considered on par with the other front office teams. Maybe it's changed since but likely not. In a sense that is expected, given the firm's DNA is essentially in non-quant and fundamental investing. That is what has helped them grow into one of the most successful hedge funds at the moment. It is mushroom management a bit though. It's more keep your head down and keep producing good research. This setup has probably contributed to the large number of departures from the quant teams of people with up to around 3 or 5 years of experience. Normally over 80% of team comprise of graduates and people with a few years of experience. Beyond that level people generally move on elsewhere. I got the impression that management weren't particularly bothered by this situation. The churn is sort of factored into their hiring decisions. Like I said earlier though, it is a great place to be early on in one's career. As long as you approach it as such you are unlikely to be disappointed. The quality of people that work there is very high. I definitely do not regret the years I spent there.

    Great firm to work for

24 Feb 2014 - Analyst in London, England, England

    Pros

Nice people who work hard and achieve good results. Good offices and location, and with renovation and expansion underway, they'll get better. Work/life balance is good, especially for a hedge fund. The leadership are hard working, professional and accessible - not aloof like the stereotypical hedge fund managers. The leadership also pushes the firm to do significant charitable work through the Absolute Return for Kids (ARK) charity.

    Cons

This place is results driven; relationships don't carry much weight - that won't suit everyone. They have quite restrictive web access policies that block all manner of webmail, social media and other non-work related content. IT is not great for remote working.

    Analysts treated poorly

    Pros

Very nice office, free meals. Big firm with good resources.

    Cons

Zero concern for analysts. Lousy pay. Recruiters exaggerate bonus potential during hiring process without disclosing unfavourable deferred comp structure. Analysts get fired on a whim. Partners and PMs hoard most of the profit and throw chump change to analysts. Management could care less about developing analysts.
