I have been working at NTT DATA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great location, great people, great career path and great projects. I feel I learn a lot from the senior management who have vision and get consulting. Whenever I ask a question to senior management their insight and content is impressive. It's very agile here and you can quicly make an impact.

    Cons

Not sure why people have put negative reviews about NTT DATA UK. Yes we do some IT work but I joined for the digital strategy consulting and have not been dissapointed. It really feels like an innovative start up and is a great place for your career. We have won projects head to head with McKinsey. As the Head of Impact said "if clients want low end cheap stuff they can go to TCS, if they want high end consulting they come to us".

I have been working at NTT DATA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Everybody thinks “how to give the most to our customers”. There is an amazing spirit of collaboration and camaraderie, from upper management, between colleagues, with peers, and team members. No “agendas” between people. A very friendly organisation that really cares for the employees, their careers progression, their well-being, their professional enrichment, their work-life balance. The company also really cares and takes very seriously the social responsibility as reflected in the charities it supports and how the company encourages employees to take active roles in contributing the many social causes

    Cons

This amazing company is one of the “best kept secrets” in UK in some customers / industries, and there is a need for immediate change that and make the company known to all, so customers can benefit and company can continue to attract amazing challenge.

I have been working at NTT DATA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Some great people to spend time with inside and outside of work.

    Cons

As other reviews have highlighted the UK business of NTT DATA is really a body shop. There is a big HR and marketing push (tube adverts, website, banners etc.) to make out that the UK business is some cool innovation consulting unit leveraging assets from Japan. This is totally untrue. The place is a body shop with limited opportunities for consulting. It's all IT services, which is great if that's what you join for, but not so great if you come expecting consulting or innovation projects to work on.

    NTT DATA Response

    Head of Consulting

Thank you for your review, we take all feedback very seriously as we pride ourselves on having an open and honest culture, and continually strive to make NTT DATA an even better place to work. We pride ourselves on the interesting projects that we do to help our clients transform their businesses. We work with everyone to ensure that we can grow their career and focus on key areas of development and interest. The size of NTT DATA allows our people to work across many industries and technologies which is not always the case in other larger consultancies. Our increasing focus on proposition-led engagements and emerging technologies means that everyone gets the opportunity to engage in our Squads/ practices and to contribute through other diverse work streams such as CSR, D&I, Tech Talks, and Service Line capabilities. The objective is to empower everyone in the business to change and shape the organisation for the better. We strive to have an open and honest culture that is free of favouritism and bias, if we aren’t achieving that we need to know so that we can take action. Feel free to talk to me (or any member of the UK leadership team) in confidence or if you don’t feel that you can do that, talk to HR

    Pros

A positive and low ego culture where the leadership team is down to earth and accessible. Feels like a start up but working hard to put the appropriate systems and processes in place to match the rapid growth. Agile, decisions are made quickly, you can make an impact here. Inclusive environment, nice offices and strong Japanese heritage. Engaging CEO!

    Cons

There is a thin line between agility and chaos

    Pros

Some nice people, who get disillusioned and leave.

    Cons

Whatever reviews you read if you decide to join NTT DATA UK do your research. Ask the right questions (they will lie to you) and stay away if low end IT services or bodyshopping is not for you. Before you even come for an interview consider: - Does NTT DATA UK have genuine practice areas based on shared intellectual property? No. There are squads but this is all fluff, the output of which has not been used to sell into clients in any meaningful way. - Does NTT DATA UK limit its consultants’ billable time for strategic purposes? No. As a bodyshop NTT DATA UK bills as much of its consultants’ time as possible, all the time. (In contrast real consultancy firms continually invests time in improving its collective knowledge and performance.) - Does NTT DATA UK measure success in terms of profitability per engagement? NTT DATA UK's goal is simply to bill as much as possible as time and materials(T&M) so it can “run the clock” as long as it can. (Real consulting firms use their knowledge to deliver high-value fixed-price engagements.) - Does NTT DATA UK leverage new skills to build higher-level relationships? In true bodyshop style NTT DATA UK simply adds new skills to its list of “things we do.” (Real consultancy firms analyses and leverage new skills into higher-level client relationships.)

    Pros

    - Business consulting community are great people (not the leadership). - Good work life balance (would be the case for body shopping)

    Cons

    - There is no consulting to be found here, just bodyshopping, might as well go and work for the clients. - Nothing strategic. - They sell you dreams in the role description, probably find yourself on the bench anyway. - Take positive reviews with a pinch of salt.

    NTT DATA Response

    Head of Consulting

Thank you for taking time to post this review. We pride ourselves on having an open and honest culture where all feedback we receive is taken seriously so that we can continue to make NTT DATA a great place to work. The whole environment that we aim to create is one that fosters, transparency and a lack of hierarchy. In order to support that we create many opportunities during our social activities and within our offices in Shoreditch, The City and Birmingham to speak up and have a direct contact with diverse peers, colleagues and leaders such as our weekly Elevenses, First Friday and monthly social events. Sometimes we ask our staff to do “client side” roles so that we can break into accounts and “land-and-expand”. As we are in growth mode we probably have more of these roles than we would normally. In order to lessen the impact of this on our permanent staff we employ a large number of contractors so that we can put them into the “bodyshop” roles leaving our staff to work on projects. Our People Manager structure exists to support our staff through the staffing process, when out on client site and through the whole of our careers at NTT DATA. This is the frontline for dealing with issues that impact how we feel about our company and the work that we do. They have a direct escalation route for dealing with concerns to either UK leadership or HR.

I worked at NTT DATA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Apart from the London office location the real pro for working here is that you can shine very easily given the quality of people, especially middle-senior management. A good place to come if you need a job quickly and then leave.

    Cons

NTT DATA UK is not a place I would recommend. They are stuck between trying to external sell high value consulting but in reality just sell low end IT stuff and bodyshopping. When i was there it was clear there was a level of delusion (spot the reviews comparing NTT DATA UK to McKinsey). The reality is a very low end bodyshopping IT company where the majority >90% of projects are on T&M - the classic sign on no value add bodyshopping IT work.

I worked at NTT DATA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The only positive about NTT DATA UK is that the location of its offices in Central London.

    Cons

There are quite a few negatives about working for NTT DATA UK as detailed below: 1) Cronyism: The defining characteristic of NTT DATA UK is its rampant cronyism and favoritism. You can choose to become a part of the "inner circle" or clique of influential people that are empowered by the very top management of the organisation. Once you become a crony and be a part of the inner circle, then you can expect promotions every year despite the level of your (in)competence. Needless to say, when incompetence is promoted, competence moves away. Many of the old timers at this place appear to live in a make-believe bubble where they think they are part of a great team that is changing the business world or doing some brilliant, path-breaking work. The reality of it is something else(as described below). Anyone considering NTT DATA UK must evaluate this aspect as the favoritism at this place can have serious repercussions on your career path. 2) Bodyshopping, not Consulting: NTT DATA UK tries to sell itself as a Consulting firm, however, almost all the projects here are IT Services or pure bodyshopping. This is evident by the fact that most of the lower grade "consultants" would be in IT project management. It was indeed strange to read that the CEO of this firm once spoke in an interview that he had never worked in IT, when the entire business is pure IT Services and body shopping. NTT DATA UK tries hard to leverage the NTT brand and its Japanese roots, along with the achievement of its sister companies, only to fall short in landing any worthwhile consulting projects. Anyone who wants to join this firm must be able to filter out the noise of consulting that will be sold to you, and be prepared to work on IT projects. 3) Lack of competence in management: Owing to the fact that they tend to live in bubble and have only ever worked in IT projects, the middle and upper management possess a level of competence that does not match with the top tier consulting firms of the world. It was a shame to see some really talented youngsters being wasted away on body shopping projects. There is a serious lack of thought leadership because most of the published thought pieces are derivatives of the work from other consulting firms or sister concerns. There is a lack of opportunity to learn from senior management since they can only teach from the limited pool of knowledge or skill that they possess. Anyone considering to join NTT DATA UK must remember that you learn better when you are not the smartest person in the room. 4) Sheer Toxicity: Although there are many social events to attend, there is a dearth of genuine and healthy camaraderie at NTT DATA UK. There is a persistent feeling of being under scrutiny all the time if you do not belong to the inner circle. The firm endeavors to present an exciting brand to the outer world by encouraging and coaxing employees to write glowing reviews on social media, especially Glassdoor and LinkedIn. As someone has written in an earlier review, I would strongly advise to read the positive reviews with a massive pinch of salt.
