I have been working at National Grid (UK) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Work life balance. Diversity. Benefits.

    Cons

Distinct lack of understanding of the foundations required to create a sustainable workplace. Too many contractors reinventing the wheel. Lack of trust. Unfair progress processes, more who you know than what you know. People are beginning to stop caring.

    Advice to Management

Get a grip on reality within the workplace. Stop giving in too easily and restarting programmes too soon. Understand that successful programmes require strong change management. Use the expertise within the organisation rather than constantly bringing outsiders in. Concentrate on one large change programme at a time instead of six. Provide cohesion and collaboration from the top.

I have been working at National Grid (UK)

    Pros

Good work life balance (Depending on the team you are in) Some interesting diverse work Flexible working

    Cons

Transport links in are poor. Lack of consistency in general leadership and house keeping across managers. Top level management are too far away from whats really going on due to the structure. Recently went through cost cutting re organisation which has left them short so now need having to recruit. Too many leaders are "subject matter experts" and dont know how to lead a team or control workload. Very political.

    Advice to Management

Understand what a leader vs SME is, understand good performance better and control your teams workload instead of just saying yes to everything and delegating.

    Pros

Great people, genuine desire to do the right thing. Nice office environment at Warwick and amazing opportunities to work in numerous different areas, without having to move to London. US opportunities too, for strong performers

I worked at National Grid (UK) full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good working environment. Friendly employees. Many opportunities to work in various areas of the business. Well paid if you’re a specialist.

    Cons

Does not walk the walk when it comes to work-life balance or consideration of employee well-being. Some areas of the business can be toxic due to ill-equipped management that should not have been placed in positions where they manage people.

    Advice to Management

People skills at management level is lacking in certain areas of business, this presents staff with untenable situations where to work itself is suitable, but the mangement is not.
