I have been working at National Marrow Donor Program full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The mission. You can save lives. The pay is well above average. You can possibly work from home depending on who you are, how you perform and who you know. The people are generally nice. Projects with large budgets. Some upper management/VP types are friendly. Open to improving technology. Training budget for individuals. They finally rolled out paid maternity leave in October, 2019.

    Cons

CEO has good intentions, but it feels like the mission to save patients comes with a significant disregard for the health and mental well-being of his employees. Frequent re-orgs and departures. Senior leadership is hired from the outside which results in inconsistent direction for teams. High rate of change and turnover due to the aforementioned issues. Exquisitely bad paid time off program.... Parking is nonexistent. Senior leaders to-date are resistant to adapt to the needs and values of the modern workforce (sick days, flex-days, preferences on remote work, delivering recognition, fostering loyalty, etc.)

    Advice to Management

You can save more lives with a happier, dedicated and loyal workforce. You can attract top talent and create teams of uncommon caliber only if you have uncommon benefits. Here are four simple recommendations: Give employees more PTO or offer sick days. Fully embrace remote work. Increase volume and frequency of individual employee recognition. Reward employees in meaningful ways. Hire leadership from... within.

Better managers needed. People leaders, serving their employees. Executives need to understand the hard work of employees and reward them appropriately. People want to feel valued and appreciated. Tenured employees with high organizational knowledge should be highly valued. Not treated like they are disposable.

I have been working at National Marrow Donor Program full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    The mission and dedicated staff.

    Cons

Frequent reorganizations. Expecting manager or supervisor to change every few months. Processes and tasks change even more frequently. Fearing that raising concerns or not showing avid agreement will get you fired.

    Advice to Management

Talking about trust is not the same as earning it. Employees are conscientious and care deeply about the mission. Don't fire or demote staff for voicing opinions that aren't in vigorous agreement with you.

    Pros

Great mission, great people and great partners. The work is endlessly fascinating and inspiring.

    Cons

Insulated senior leadership team advancing troublesome cultural shift. The ideals sound great on paper but in practice have created a chaotic and bullying work environment.

With new CEO many changes have occurred which have not been positive. Departments broken up, good people let go, work from home days taken away.

I worked at National Marrow Donor Program full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The mission, brilliant people on the research side.

    Cons

FINALLY they have replaced some toxic managers in FP&A. But good people have left the org in the meantime. If they had the courage to make the changes when whey were apparent 3 to 4 years ago, a lot of talent could've been retained.

    Advice to Management

Within the low level manager ranks, do not put tenure above effectiveness. Recognize the issue. Correct the issue. See improvement.

I worked at National Marrow Donor Program full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The mission of saving lives. I learned a lot from others and made some really great friendships with co-workers.

    Cons

They set unrealistic goals and are constantly changing things. Just when you get used to a new change, they find so many faults with it that they change it again. And the people making the change have never done the job. There’s no time to breathe and they keep piling more and more on you to the point that you can’t finish other cases completely. One manager had the nerve to say that you should only be working 40... hours a week otherwise you’re not doing the job efficiently. Really?! Where are the tools to do the job well? It’s a flawed system! Patients lives matter but so do employees!

    Advice to Management

Management is the problem. Give us the proper tools to do the job and start caring about the health of your employees. Hire the right amount of people to do the job so your employees have a life and can find that happy balance. Otherwise BTM is going to fall down fast and there will be no small guys doing all the important work. And guess who suffers the most. The patients.
