I have been working at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Ethics run deep, genuinely doing the right thing for its members (customers) which leaves your conscience clear. It generally means you are working with nice people. Wider package is good especially the pension. Competency based interview means nepotism/favouritism shouldn't be a factor.

    Cons

It can be a slow moving organisation but that is beginning to change. Competency based interview ties their hands - those who manage to communicate the competencies better get the job ahead of others who don't handle the interview so well. Occasionally the wrong person gets the job. Don't believe the salary range for advertised jobs, the upper half of the range is unachievable to start with or in the early years... in the role.

I worked at Nationwide Building Society for more than 10 years

    Pros

Mutual to the core and tries to do the right thing. Depending on the team/squad you are in you are well respected, and given access to all levels of management. Flexible working, good rates of pay and interesting stuff to do

    Cons

Place is now run by Architects who step well beyond their role to influence absolutely everything. Blows hot and cold with budgets, so one minute plenty of funds to deliver and get job done - next minute, cost cutting left right and centre. So many layers of management (despite huge attempts to remove it) and very siloed organisational structure meaning so many unnecessary delays in getting anything signed off or... progressed

    Advice to Management

I have been at Nationwide for well over a decade as both a permanent and a contractor. Used to be a fantastic place with lots of variety, interesting things to do. These days the organisational structure (which is now being implemented has not bed in and therefore the organisation is choking itself with inability to be able to deliver anything. Major projects/programmes are being cut with budget cuts yet, our trusty... architects continue to gold plate everything and dictate all that is done. I used to recommend Nationwide, but these days, I'd only go there if there is nothing else.

I worked at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great work life balance The people at the heart of the business are fantastic

    Cons

Middle management out of touch with the workers. Stuff gets done because of the team in spite of the managers, not because of. Ambition is huge, but still too slow at actually making the changes to enable this. The talent get frustrated quickly and become restless. Swindon.

I worked at Nationwide Building Society for more than a year

    Pros

I worked here as a contractor for 3 months: 1) Nicer culture compared to others in FS 2) Most people I met were very capable 3) Good environment in the various offices 4) CEO is very open and engaging

    Cons

Can't think of many cons....maybe they can be a little insulated from the real world sometimes which leads to a bit of naivety

I have been working at Nationwide Building Society for more than 10 years

    Pros

Interesting work, empowered to deliver the project end to end, Generally supportive colleagues

    Cons

Office politics often scupper best intentions, lots of empire building and silo mentality. Overly engineered processes and just too many projects on the go at once making basic expectations like resource availability a daily battle

    Advice to Management

Stop some of the projects and programmes and stick with the core work... do less and do it better

I have been working at Nationwide Building Society full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Very good working environment. Collaborative organisation Good terms and conditions Flexible working Socially aware and active

    Cons

Advocacy seems to be more important than performance. A bit nepotistic and sexist Seem to prefer expensive contractors to own staff. Normal corporate hoops to jump through with no obvious gain Inconsistent application of policies.

    Advice to Management

Look within for talent first. Get rid of some of the dead wood - too stuck in their ways reduce over reliance on contractors

I worked at Nationwide Building Society

    Pros

Good work life balance reduced rate Gym and Canteen

    Cons

From my tour around the various head office locations as a Consultant/Project Manager, Management in call centres seemed little more than glorified team leaders, who would pretend to be busy doing key deliverable that when presented, were of GCSE Powerpoint standard. When grilled on various rational or numbers, they often did not have answers and seemed removed from the every day goings on of the people below... them Speaking to the general average employee (at Junior Call Centre level) most did not know of what their immediate manager or senior manager did and what added value they brought

    Pros

Care about the customer, change driven. Ok salaries and benefits. Fast growing company.

    Cons

Very crowded office, always noisy. Company has grown very quickly and the small company culture has not coped. Perm staff not happy with high number of contractors.

    Advice to Management

Show more leadership don't rely on a few posters stuck up on the walls.

I have been working at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good work life balance, challenging projects, great support from managers, good training and career advancement opportunities, people nice and pleasant to work with

    Cons

Stakeholders can be challenging, some individuals with big personalities who are used to getting their own way. Processes cumbersome which can be difficult to navigate. Perfection is expected with little grace given.

    Advice to Management

Continue to do what your doing. Mutuality is a great differentiator and is something we should continue to exploit. Be careful not to throw out the baby with the bath water. People who have been with the society for a long time understand our DNA and can help to deliver the changes we need to make.
