    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Newton Europe full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They have just (01 April 2017) let go of over 30 employees, in one go, due to a downsizing of the business as a consequence of poor sales performance. If the current situation with their underdeveloped sales pipeline continues, further headcount reductions of a similar size are possible

    Cons

Toxic work culture. No women in the upper 2 levels of management. Less than 10 people of a non Caucasian ethnic origin in the entire company (c. 220 people). Head office is based next to what appears to be a scrap metal dealer.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Newton Europe full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - The grads who fit into the culture genuinely seem to embrace and enjoy it.
    - Grads are given great structure to learn the 'Newton way' and taught about 'Being Newton' (there is actually a book). While it feels rigid and creates 'clones' they do learn some great skills particularly around structured thinking and problem solving.

    Cons

    - Elitist, male, engineering dominated mindset which is closed to new ideas
    - 'Cut throat' culture - there is a constant 'performance management' of people out of the business. Often due to a poor cultural fit (i.e. don't think exactly like others/not willing to conform). Extremely detrimental to the confidence of grads at the start of their career
    - As an experienced hire you are expected to spend the first year (or more) in a Business Consultant role. Essentially a delivery role. Managed by near grads (with low emotional intelligence) told to forget everything you know and learn how to 'be Newton'. There is no recognition (or even understanding) that this might feel uncomfortable or difficult.
    - A strong feedback culture. This could be a positive but unfortunately it is often delivered by people lacking the people skills or emotional intelligence to have the desired affect. Has the effect of promoting confident 'Newton types' (almost always male) and undermining any sort of diversity
    - The product that Newton delivers is essentially the same in every client. Develop KPIs and targets around throughput and then put meetings and structures in place to make people work faster and harder. While this delivers results in some cases the lack of empathy or change management understanding undermines the work they are doing
    - Does not embrace technology internally or in client solutions
    - Complete lack of diversity. There are no female directors or Associate Directors (top 20-25 people in the business) and only 3 to 5 in the top 50 (estimate)
    - Can feel like a cult

    Advice to Management

    - Evolution is essential to survive.
    - A review at BM/AD level is essential
    - You need to hire people who have empathy and people skills (as well as analytical problem solving skills). Feedback from clients is very mixed
    - Promote or hire diversity into the business
    - Might be too late now but... sell while your numbers look good

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Newton Europe full-time

    Pros

Great people to work with, testing environments are good for development, good remuneration and team events through the year.

    Cons

As you'd expect for a consultancy role, living away due to working on client site etc. your line manager can make a huge difference to both happiness and career progress and whilst there are processes to develop line managers, some good project managers but bad people managers slip through.

    Advice to Management

Focus on culture is good, but need to do more to increase positivity around feedback and make people feel more appreciated for what they bring.

I have been working at Newton Europe full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Huge amount of responsibility from an early stage, real focus on personal development. Working on incredibly exciting and meaningful projects, surrounded by fun and supportive team

    Cons

Lifestyle can be difficult but such is the nature of consulting. Newton do everything they can to support you and make it fun.

    Advice to Management

Very flat structure so any advice to management can be given directly to them. They want to improve the company as much as anybody

I worked at Newton Europe full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

My colleagues were all incredibly talented people who were genuinely fun to work with. The recruitment process looks for strong social skills and that is clearly noticeable in the company culture.

The work itself is diverse and you can get great responsibility early on by proving you can handle it. This isn't a job for people with just great chat or ideas, you actually need to be able to get results by working with people of all layers within the clients.

    Cons

The lifestyle is full on. You are working away from home Monday to Friday, living in hotels. All is paid for and the company cars are great, but you will not be able to join social events at home during the week.

    Pros

Interesting, varied and challenging work. Friendly, fun and very open culture. Strong emphasis on feedback and personal development.

    Cons

Lots of travel and almost all evenings away from home during the week, but this is compensated for by not having an hours culture and always being at home from 6pm on a Friday to 6am on a Monday.

I worked at Newton Europe full-time

    Pros

The people - the most enthusiastic and friendly team I've ever seen. The culture - the company spend alot of time and money taking care of you.

    Cons

The lifestyle - whilst being on the road for the majority of your time might suit some people, it isn't for everyone.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing on maintaining the culture as you grow. it would be a shame to hit 1000 people but have lost the culture.

I have been working at Newton Europe full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Huge investment in personal development and the significant responsibility given early on allowing you to develop as fast as you can

The company is a breath of fresh air to work for, constantly challenging you, each other and our clients

People are not just colleagues but become close friends. The company culture fosters a fun atmosphere

    Great perks bespoke to Newton

    Cons

We work on client-site, meaning we have to work hard and deliver value to the client. There is no room to coast along, but that is part of the excitement! The lifestyle, especially early in the career is away from home 4 nights a week, which may not be for everyone.

    Advice to Management

Do not compromise on the quality of people being brought in despite the rapid growth.

    Pros

Intelligent and motivated people to work with and a big focus on personal development. The responsibility you get early on in your career is unrivalled in the industry.

    Cons

You work away from home most of the time, but the company makes sure that you don't leave too early on a Monday morning, and you're home by 6pm on a Friday.

I have been working at Newton Europe full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A genuinely different consultancy proposition which means we deliver results
    Excellent personal growth
Steep remuneration curve, equity stake at business manager and above
Fun and challenging (in a good way) culture with many solid friendships made
    Rewarding work
    Meritocratic recruitment and promotions system

    Cons

Delivering on client site necessitates being away from home, and though that lessens as you become more senior it never stops being a requirement to be away 2-4 nights per week

    Advice to Management

Don't ever compromise on the calibre of those you're bringing in or the culture you drive
