Pros

You can walk away with some good items for the resume as the agency is small so there's lots of opportunity to be hands on.

Cons

Let's start with the fact that many of the positive reviews here were written by current employees who were "strongly encouraged" to do so by the CEO. So essentially they are plants, not real, honest reviews. The CEO is incredibly charismatic. She could sell ice to an eskimo. During your interview process, she does an incredible job of painting a rosy picture of the company and lays out ambitious growth plans, of which will, of course, include you having incredible new opportunities. She oversells the agency a lot, telling gilded tales of big clients and projects, many of which she fails to mention were over a decade ago. She has a decent circle of business in Boston (which tends to fluctuate), but no substantial reach outside of Boston. Much of the way the company positions itself is how it would LIKE to be, not how it actually is. The work environment is unstable and unstructured. Turnover at this agency is incredibly high. I encourage you to go on LinkedIn and use the search filter to look for people who previously worked there. You'll see stints as short as a few months before people have moved on. Why the turnover? Mostly the CEO and her lack of good leadership and people management skills. Micromanagement is a huge issue, and has been for a long time. Things that require approvals will take a long time to be approved by the CEO. Your work will get backed up, and then you will be flooded with work, then expected to meet her tight deadlines, even if you've been waiting for her for weeks. The CEO uses coded language as a manipulative tool to stretch the team incredibly thin. When she tells you you're doing a great job and she wants you to "elevate," run for the hills. That's coded language for "I want you to take on even more work, at the same rate of pay." You cannot raise your hand and say you think it is too much, as there will be repercussions. She will pin the very survival of the agency on you, and she expects an employee to put in as much work as an owner of the firm. Agency life is stressful. But this agency and its leadership is really unlike any other. I encourage you to steer clear.

Pros

While I once believed this company may have been fully functioning and had a dedicated staff...

Cons

Beware! Under the surface of Nickerson’s positivity is a shady, twisted and broken people relations company that cares little for people and the relationships they end up destroying. It is a cruel and stressful job where you will be unhappy and alone for the entire ride. Red flags were present for me at the start, including: - Not being hired for the position applied for until many months later - Being put on the team in the middle of a move; I had to set up computers for myself, the other staff, and the CEO - Having my manager quit without warning and leaving me to fend for myself (this became a running theme in the office) - Staff coming in as early as 6 AM and not leaving until well past 5 PM - Phone systems not being set up correctly; clients and job applicants constantly came in and had no idea who to call or where to meet us - Interns being overworked on executive-level projects without pay - Receiving no formal training, no one to regularly report to, and having no idea what I was supposed to be doing Ready or not, my position and duties kept changing to fit the CEO’s agenda. While this may be common in most jobs, the team would not be fully informed on what any project was about. Also, the CEO was never usually present to give any form of clarity. This only led to miscommunication and frustration. She would often blame others for her own failure to successfully deliver a project. Worse, one’s extra hours, long weekends, and time-off working on these projects usually ended up becoming futile. With the CEO’s mismanaged schedule and needing to have the final say in everything, projects take forever to get approved of. And when I say “everything”, I mean projects ranging from business proposals to a caption on a social media post. The only time you could review them for edits/submission was when it was convenient for her only. And so, more often than not, projects end up being dropped, never to be spoken of again. There is no “I” in team, but there certainly is one in “Nickerson”. This brings me to the worst part of the job... Aside from Nickerson's overall incompetence, what had to have been the most disappointing aspect for me was the team dynamic. It is hard to feel welcome when you are stuck in a distrusting, rude and fearful environment. There is no positive recognition, no team activities, and no one to talk to about your issues without reprehension. Instead, you will be excluded from team meetings and talked down to if you are not a "yes-man". You will constantly be the subject of office gossip and put down for every minor error you make. You will go home most days uninspired, humiliated, and angry. You will be kicked on your way out and never thanked for your hard work and flexibility. The day I was laid off I didn’t receive a performance review or was asked to do a post-job interview. They had already deleted my Dropbox account (while I was still working) and cleared me out immediately without as so much as a goodbye email. They still, however, use team pictures of me and other staff no longer part of the company in recent promotional material. Important components of any team-based environment are trust and communication. When a communications company fails to deliver these components, trust me when I say: Stay far away from Nickerson.

Pros

There are some good pizza places near the office.

Cons

The recent 5-star reviews are all written by management. There is no "sink or swim" environment because you will not receive the resources to stay afloat. Everyone there, with the exception of Lisa Nickerson, has been there for less than a year. This is not a place for you if you want a management team that cares about its employees, your growth, and your family life. There is no flexibility except for when it comes to the principal's schedule. This company experienced a massive transition just a few short months ago, when it was so poorly run with a structure so disorganized that approximately eight employees left and one was fired over the course of six months. When I joined the company last Spring, the company had just downsized into a smaller shared office space. My colleagues worked hours and hours on projects and client presentations, through the late hours of the night at management's request, that were eventually tossed aside. I saw employees paying for client services right out of their own pockets and they were never compensated. In order to keep up with the workload, those in entry-level roles were expected to undertake and successfully execute executive-level responsibilities with entry-level pay and little to no training or support. Lisa Nickerson openly bashes employees who are "underperforming" without them being present, which makes for a hostile and uncomfortable work environment. She hired more unpaid interns than she did paid employees at her firm, leaving the very few full-time workers without the right team to succeed. Also, there is no HR team.
