Pros

Nine Network has a diligent and fantastic staff who is committed to ensuring they serve the community at large. The staff really does feel like a family and works hard to ensure that events, programs, and other projects are the best fit for the community.

Cons

The leadership of the Nine Network can be abusive and, at times, doesn't seem to have a real direction for the station at large. In addition, there are countless meetings; meetings to prepare for other meetings that could be easily coordinated via email.

Soulless workplace with no leadership

Pros

First let me say, some angels are working for the Nine Network. In spite of working in a hostile, negative environment, these employees come in day after day and do amazing work. These are mostly low-paid support staff (and mostly older women) who love the PBS mission and stay because they believe in the PBS purpose: educating our communities. Working beside these amazing coworkers taught me everything about the importance of public media.

Cons

Expect to be micromanaged and have meetings upon meetings. In these meetings, verbal abuse goes unchecked. One VP's style is to verbally insult her staff, outside business partnerships and other Nine Network VP's. And none of those meetings will matter because the staff who have been there for over 15 years get a pass and avoid the meetings altogether. The production team lacks any diversity and creativity. It's mainly older white executives/producers creating 95% of all the content. Managers do little to nurture or mentor their staff or interns. Producers hate the interns; it makes them have to work harder. In fact, they undermine the less vocal staff by paying them very low wages. If you're lucky enough to become a content producer, be prepared to spend your days making content tied to specific funders. Unlike at other PBS affiliates, at Nine Network you won't produce original daily (or even weekly) news, kids, gardening or cooking programming.

We apologize that some areas of your experience with us was not what you expected. While we are elated to know you enjoyed working with your coworkers, we also take seriously our employees' satisfaction as it relates to staff/ leadership relations. Since your time with us, we have worked diligently to improve our organizational culture by way of new leadership, employee resource groups, and all-staff discussions around various topics, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. We thank you for sharing your concerns. Your comment is appreciated as we continue to work to implement best practices.
