I have been working at Notre Dame de Namur full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart and hardworking colleagues. The location is beautiful, a natural environment within a city and on the northern end of Silicon Valley. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

There are good and bad elements of benefits. The medical plan is costly if you insure family members or partners. Time off is generous. Salary/pay is low for the region. There are faculty who feel entitled to higher pay and share negative attitudes because of it.

    Advice to Management

I feel that management is doing the best they can to ensure long-term health and stability for the university. That said, they need to provide regular salary increases commensurate with performance. A performance based salary structure is fair.

    Pros

the faculty collaborate well, are enthusiastic and great to work with. Small class sizes and great students. The campus is lovely and they are unionizing.

    Cons

Administration doesn't know what they are doing. They do not understand transparency or shared governance. They don't know how to handle money.

    Pros

Committed to Diversity, small campus community, offers community based learning.

    Cons

Chronically out of money and fearing closure. High level of ongoing tension between faculty and administration

    Advice to Management

Admit students that are well prepared

I have been working at Notre Dame de Namur full-time

    Pros

The workplace environment is one of the best that I've ever encountered in my work history. At one point I became extremely ill and not only were they very willing to help accommodate my schedule but also remained supportive throughout the experience.

    Cons

Pay is low but holidays and holiday pay is generous. Good health insurance. Tuition remission is a huge plus. Had a workplace harassment issue that went on for nearly a year until action was finally taken by higher management.

    Advice to Management

    Consider paying staff more equally.

I worked at Notre Dame de Namur (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Paid winter break, a very few nice employees, reasonable work hours, can go to school for free after six months. That's it.

    Cons

Poor morale. Managers/Departments act as if they like each other but openly discuss how much they hate one another to the employees of their department. Faculty and staff do not get along or communicate. The pay is below average and there is no room to grow. Issues within departments are never resolved and the employee is the one to leave because HR, directors, and VPs to do like to get involved. Employees are afraid to ask for time off because managers throw a fit. Unpaid overtime.
Managers show favoritism towards a few staff members and students. There is favoritism towards student athletes which some departments have been know to bend certain rules and policies for.

    Advice to Management

Be kind to your staff, treat them with respect, and managers keep your attitude problems in check. Employees are not responsible for your bad days.

I worked at Notre Dame de Namur full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

+1 star for the people and community - a lot of passion and student-centered
+1 star for the students - the values of social justice and service are pinnacle for many

    Cons

-1 star for the management/turnover - poor communicators, ineffective leaders and terrible at judging morale. You're constantly getting a new supervisor and a new team because of turnover.
-1 star for the retention/enrollment/budget woes - this school not only struggles to keep their students but also to recruit new ones. This adds pressure to all departments to try to keep functioning at the same or better capacity with less resources.
-1 star for being underpaid, overworked and under-appreciated - they expect miracles with a shoestring budget. Don't expect your paycheck to keep pace with the cost of living.

The values and mission appeal to many but, unfortunately, it's all talk and little walk and even the students see that.

    Advice to Management

Management is well aware of the problems. Unfortunately, they can't always take action because of budgetary restraints.. or perhaps lack of caring.

I worked at Notre Dame de Namur (More than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers and supervisors are always friendly, and versatile in their knowledge base. Students have very reliable, and prompt one on one appointments with staff. If you like working in a university that's quick to travel between campus buildings, and with class sizes comparable to community college size classrooms and offices as opposed to a large auditorium then you would enjoy working here.

    Cons

The university is on a hill. It only takes about 5 - 7 minutes to walk up the hill from street level, but disabled students and/or staff using wheelchairs that are manual as opposed to motorized might have a bit of a challenge getting up the driveway on the hill. So, they may need to make arrangements with the public safety office or an agency like Ready Wheels to take them up the hill.

    Pros

Good mission helping first generation and lower income students. Very diverse and location and campus has potential.

    Cons

Faculty is unionizing wanting more and the University is making cuts because they have less. Totally moving in different directions and in total disarray. Unless this can be resolved and everyone starts marching to the same tune, the University won't survive.

    Advice to Management

There are only one solution to the problem - more revenue. More students for more revenue or more donations for more revenue. Fixed costs are too high for current revenue.
