I worked at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time

    Pros

High standard research and drug discovery and care for patients

    Cons

Sometimes the higher managenent is out of touch with the rest of the team. High pressure enviroment ( however this could be positive)

    Advice to Management

    Communicate more

I worked at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Reasonable pay, free private health care, shares scheme. Innovative, patient - oriented research, with a real push behind unmet medical need.

    Cons

People tend to be promoted to the point of incompetence. Too many line managers here have exceptionally poor management skills and deep resistance to change (not all, but the majority) Glass ceilings for those qualified below PhD level. Colleagues at lower levels are generally miserable, depressed and resentful of their employer, which makes for a poor culture throughout.

    Advice to Management

Every company is built on the foundation of their employees. Happy employees work harder, and good line management encourages this. The over involvement of HR undermines the employees trust of the establishment.

I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - vacation time
    - sick time
    - flexible schedule (dependent on your manager though)
    - holiday shutdown

(look at that, the pros are when I don't have to be working)

    Cons

    - things move slowly
    - unclear processes
    - a lot of inexperienced people are brought in (very limited clinical trial experience) -- NIBR needs to provide adequate training

    Advice to Management

recognize the talent you have. it's recognized that you have 'favorites' that move through the ranks quickly and whether these people are actually qualified to move up is questionable. the actual people that deserve to be moved up or around end up leaving.

I worked at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This place was a great place to work when the site focused on Oncology. After ID and its Management came to Emeryville the site began its downward spiral.

Some pros while I was there: Unlimited sick days, generous vacation package.

    Cons

Incompetent managers continuously throwing subordinates under the bus, managers taking credit for others work, Sr. leadership fails to recognize and reward good work and rampant misogyny throughout - especially the Medicinal Chemistry department.

    Cons

Not enough opportunities to collaborate with outside experts, no budget for travel to conferences/meeting, very difficult to publish & patent

    Advice to Management

Innovation opportunities, investing in new cutting edge technologies is slow and desease area dependent.
