I have been working at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lovely people with nice environment to work, good work life balance, ambitious. Great pipeline of product and genuine ambition (unrealised) to improve patient life.

    Cons

To much analysis, lack of decisive decision making means slow to react. Lack customer focus/engagement at senior level. Terrible car policy with high employee charges if you leave.

    Advice to Management

Be brave - make the right decision as you see it. That is better than no decision. Remember employees work 80% for their manager 20% for their company. Get the manager (BL) recruitment right. Invest in IT it’s terrible that KAMs have to work from an IPad only, not practical.

I have been working at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time

    Pros

Great people, culture, pay and most of the benefits, semi-flexible approach to working, exciting industry to work in. Good development opportunities, if you take charge of your own development.

    Cons

Inexperienced leadership team, who only look after themselves and move on within a couple of years. Very political and not really a speak up culture unless you want to damage your career. High work load throughout the company and hard to achieve unless you work significant extra hours. Great opportunities to move around the company and progress, if your face fits. If not, forget it. Poor sick pay and maternity options. Constant change so hard to find any momentum and continuity which results in poor motivation - you are just waiting to hear when your own job is going. Terrible processes.

    Advice to Management

You are all good people but need to step up as leaders to the wider business and not just your own divisions. Top talent want a real work-life balance, respect and career progression, not politics, fear of speaking out, constant change. We know change is inevitable but you barely get time to settle into one role before it changes to something else. Leaders do not stay long enough.

    Pros

    Benefits package
Location (free transport from local stations)
    Interesting industry
    Good selection of people
Good on site facilities, including a gym.

    Cons

Under appreciated work force that drive the changes funnelled down from the top.
Lack of support to integral parts of the business.
Poor pay rises less than inflation, should you be entitled.
Nature of the industry, its always changing.
    Lack of development and direction

    Advice to Management

Don't forget about the people at the bottom, keep them motivated and appreciated,

I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

For the majority of my time there I loved going to work. I worked on projects within several areas of the UK organisation, and with the leadership team, which gave me quite an honest insight to 'how things are'. Overall, this is an aspirational company with some truly talented individuals and an inspirational portfolio and pipeline. Their development programme is excellent - tough, but bursting with exciting opportunity if you want to carve a career.

    Cons

One negative result of the development programme, and a general cultural shift in recent times, is that some leaders are focussed primarily on their own career path, to the detriment of progress and good business practices. It can also be quite political which directly impacts the progression of brilliant ideas when middle-managers choose not to back something for bureacratic reasons.

    Advice to Management

Don't let mediocre leadership qualities and patchy middle management spoil this amazing company.

  10. "Novartis Pharmaceuticals internship"

    StarStarStarStarStar

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

    - The headquarters (in Basel) has quite a lot of networking events - with good food!
    - The main campus is impressive with really great architecture
    - Most jobs have pretty flexible working hours - you don't have to start and end the day at a specific time (clock-in system)

    Cons

    - Perhaps due to the size of the company, it can be quite disorganised - often you would have trouble finding the right department to help you with certain issues
